When the first snow begins to fall in Idaho, there is plenty to celebrate. Winter in Idaho is magical and one of the best ways to enjoy this time of year is at the McCall Winter Carnival. Attending this annual winter festival in Idaho is a tradition for many Idahoans. In fact, this winter carnival draws more than 60,000 people to the small town of McCall every single year. The McCall Winter Carnival dates back nearly 100 years. It was first held in 1924 and was inspired by the Payette Lake Winter Games.
However, it wasn’t until the 1960s that it became the official McCall Winter Carnival we all know and love.
This carnival lasts for 3 days and there is no shortage of activities.
Each day, the schedule is packed with events for the entire family. Many of the activities are enjoyed year after year while some are new and unique.
One of the most popular activities is the snow sculpture competition.
Artists travel from all over the United States to participate in this unique event and you will certainly see some incredible frozen sculptures.
Winners of the local Snow Sculpture Contest are awarded the first day of the carnival...
...so you can travel around McCall and admire each amazing masterpiece.
You also won’t want to miss the fireworks!
They take place over Payette Lake on both the opening and closing nights of the carnival.
There are also various parades that will take place throughout the McCall Winter Carnival including a Children’s Torchlight Parade...
... and a Mardi Gras Parade. These parades attract quite a crowd and are some of the most highly-anticipated events at this annual celebration.
You can also enjoy live music and shop at various vendors throughout the festival.
A few other popular events during the McCall Winter Carnival include a pancake breakfast, snow bike race, and various dinners.
