Your Best Summer Experience in Idaho Isn’t by Car, It’s on a Jet Boat
This isn't your typical boat ride.
Hells Canyon is one remarkable natural feature that I believe doesn’t receive the attention it deserves. This is the deepest canyon in North America—even deeper than the Grand Canyon by nearly 2,000 feet. The canyon is located in Idaho and Oregon and, at it’s widest point, is 10 miles wide. For millions of years, the majestic Snake River has been shaping this wonder, and while there are a few different ways that you can experience the magnitude, beauty, and awe of the area, there’s nothing quite like a scenic jet boat ride. In fact, a ride through this canyon may become your favorite summer experience in Idaho this year.
When visiting Hells Canyon, you can take a drive on the Hells Canyon Scenic Byway or even tackle one of the canyon's many trails in both Idaho or Oregon. However, to explore this canyon in a whole new way, I recommend you book a jet boat tour. You’ll ride along the Snake River, through the heart of the canyon, with an experienced guide teaching you more about the geology of this natural wonder, its history, the wildlife you may see, and so much more.
This jet boat tour, available to book on Viator, begins in White Bird, Idaho. Here, you will hop in the jet boat with your guide for approximately six hours. The canyon views will impress you the entire way, and you may even spot wildlife along the shore and in the water. However, this won’t always be a slow and steady boat ride as your guide will also take you through Class II-V whitewater—you may need a little courage for this stretch of the ride.
In addition to the views, you’ll spot historic ranches and learn more about the people who settled throughout the canyon and once called it home. Also, you will receive a three-course lunch of either chicken, ribs, or pulled pork. Dietary restrictions are available—just make sure you note your restrictions when booking.
At least six individuals are needed to run the tour; the maximum tour group size is 24. Most boats are not wheelchair accessible, but options are available. If you need accommodations, reach out to Hammer Down River Excursions to learn more.
This tour ends at Pittsburg Landing Boat Launch in White Bird. If you are interested in this scenic jet boat tour in Idaho, I recommend that you book as early as possible. For more information, including availability and rates, visit Viator.
