Why Fort Clinch State Park Is One of My Favorite Haunted Places in Florida
If you're brave enough, plan a trip to explore this spooky destination in Florida. It's my favorite haunted spot.
Florida gets a bad rap, and I completely understand why. We have our share of wacky and weird phenomena, many of which we can’t explain. Plus, our rich history and colorful past are riddled with violent events and tragic endings. Obviously, there will be many destinations with haunted tales of restless souls and evidence of paranormal activities.
The good news? Many of these creepy places are beautiful and worth exploring. That includes my favorite haunted place in Florida: Fort Clinch State Park in Fernandina Beach. The 1,400-acre haven boasts peaceful trails and pristine shorelines, but on the flip side, the 19th-century fort is rumored to be haunted. If you dare, come with me to uncover the fascinating, ghostly tales of this haunted state park in Florida.
About Fort Clinch State Park
You can find Fort Clint State Park on Amelia Island, 30 minutes northeast of Jacksonville. Nestled on the northern banks of the peninsula, the park is surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean, Amelia River, and the St. Marys River. The outdoor playground has activities for everyone to enjoy, including hiking, biking, swimming, fishing, paddling, camping, shelling, wildlife viewing, and so much more. Plus, there is a visitor center and a museum with interpretive signs and exhibits. Of course, Fort Clinch is the main attraction here, and it’s open to the public for tours.
Construction began on the fort in the 1840s, but it was not completed due to ongoing civil unrest in the country. Throughout the years, the fortress was used as a prison, barracks, and an ammunition depot for three wars: the Civil War, the Spanish‑American War, and World War II. It was eventually abandoned and in 1935, the Florida State Park system acquired the land.
Although no significant battles were fought at this historic site, it became a place of refuge for injured soldiers. Legend has it that soldiers who succumbed to their wounds were buried right outside the walls of the fort. Additionally, several soldiers were executed as well, but there is no official count of how many people lost their lives here.
Is Fort Clinch Haunted?
I can’t confirm or deny whether Fort Clinch State Park is actually haunted. However, many rumors have swirled over the years about chilling ghostly soldiers roaming the corridors. Some people have reported hearing phantom gunshots, footsteps, and whispers of voices and crying babies.
Unfortunately (or perhaps fortunately), I didn’t experience any paranormal activities at the fort, but that doesn’t invalidate past accounts. Apparitions are typically linked to tragic events, and since Fort Clinch was used as a base camp for multiple wars, it has seen its share of tragedies.
Recently, paranormal experts were granted access to investigate the anomalies at the park, and reported floating orbs and unusual activities. If the park is indeed haunted, it’s my favorite haunted place in Florida to explore.
Why Visit Fort Clinch State Park?
Fort Clinch is a hidden gem and truly one of the most beautiful state parks in Florida. It’s where nature and history come together in the best way. History buffs and those who enjoy ghostly adventures can tour the fort that the Civilian Conservation Corps restored. The coolest part? If you plan your visit during the first weekend of the month, you can see soldiers dressed in traditional uniforms, reenact battlefield skills, and fire cannons.
Aside from touring the fort, I love that you can access the beach from the park. On warm days, the designated swimming area along the Atlantic Ocean near the jetty is the perfect spot to sunbathe or make a splash. Since the park is mostly surrounded by water, it’s a haven for water recreation, like surfing, paddling, and fishing.
The hiking trails meander through woodlands with semitropical plants and oaks draped with Spanish moss. The six-mile multi-use Fort Clinch Hiking and Biking Trail is one of the best ways to see the various terrains at this gorgeous playground.
Bring your furry friends and the kids along, as there is plenty for them to do here. The little ones will enjoy collecting shells and shark teeth along the shoreline. You might get lucky and spot dolphins, sea turtles, gators, Gopher tortoise, and several species of birds. The activities at Fort Clinch are endless, and you could easily spend an entire weekend here exploring this hidden gem state park in Florida.
Whether or not Fort Clinch is haunted (you’ll need to judge that for yourself), it’s a must-visit destination in Florida. Between the stunning beach, the hiking trails, and its historical significance, it’s one of my favorite parks to explore. Chances are, after you visit, you will love it too.
