Spring House, Florida’s Only Frank Lloyd Wright-Designed Private Home Is A True Feat Of Engineering
Frank Lloyd Wright's only private home in Florida, the Spring House, is an architectural marvel that can be toured today.
You don’t need to be a huge architectural fan to have heard the name Frank Lloyd Wright at least once in your lifetime. Wright was an American architect, designer, and educator who designed more than 1,000 structures over 70 years of work. With notable accomplishments like Fallingwater and the Guggenheim Museum, it's hard not to be impressed by his innovation. However, there is only one private home in Florida designed by Wright! The good news is you can still tour it! See why this formerly abandoned Frank Lloyd Wright House in Florida is still a true feat of engineering.
Spring House, also known as Lewis Spring House, is an engineering and architectural marvel. The house is located at 3117 Okeeheepkee Road in Tallahassee, but just make sure if you're visiting, you make a reservation in advance, as this is on private property.
It was designed back in the 1950s by Frank Lloyd Wright.
As Wright’s only designed private residence in Florida...
....this “pod-shaped” house is such a unique “hemicycle” shape, it’s only one of two of its kind, like many of Wright's structures.
The “hemicycle” is both concentric and intersecting circles that end up resembling a boat.
Pair that with the unique wooden features, this architectural marvel is really something to be seen in person.
Lewis Spring House was placed on the National Register of Historic Places on February 14, 1979.
Today, visitors from all over the country are able to take a tour of the property on certain days.
The Spring House Institute, Inc., which was formed by the family, is currently restoring the property with the help of the public.
The goal is to preserve the Florida legacy of both the Lewis Family and Wright.
Come take a personal tour and see for yourself why restoring this engineering and architectural feat is so important.
Especially for the history of Florida.
Getting to the Spring House by Frank Lloyd Wright is easy.
