It Doesn’t Get Much Creepier Than This Abandoned Town Hidden in Arizona

All around the Grand Canyon State, you will find abandoned buildings, creepy towns, and eerie places that nature is reclaiming. But, at the top of this list is one abandoned town that is sure to send a few chills down your spine. Ruby, Arizona is hidden away near the southern border of the state. This ghost town was once a thriving mining town that more than 1,000 residents called home. Today, it is a creepy, abandoned town that you can actually explore … but only if you dare.

The history of Ruby and its surrounding area dates back to the late 1500s when Spanish conquistadors first came and explored. Then, in the late 1800s and early 1900s, miners, prospectors, and those searching for an adventure moved to the area after various minerals were found.

Ruby became one of the largest mining camps in the area and was one of the largest producers of zinc and lead in Arizona.

The town quickly grew and many buildings were constructed, including a school, courthouse, numerous homes, and more. At its peak, approximately 1,200 people lived in the area.

Unfortunately, in the 1900s, water issues arose, attacks from Mexican bandits occurred, and other factors made life in this town difficult and a little frightening. In 1940, mining operations ceased and by 1941, most residents abandoned their homes and livelihood in Ruby, looking for a better life.

Today, Ruby may be abandoned but it is considered one of the most well-preserved ghost towns in Arizona, and quite possibly, in the entire country.

The entire town of Ruby is privately owned but you are welcome to explore this ghost town with a permit.

You can walk around and see the ruins of many structures, including household items that were once important parts of daily life.

But while many Ruby residents have fled, spirits have remained. There are reports of real ghosts who haunt the town. Fortunately, many of them are believed to be nice.
