Arizona’s Dark Winter Skies Explode With Beauty at This Star Watching Party
Join fellow stargazers at one of several state parks. Away from city lights, they are perfect dark sky destinations in Arizona.
Most people love a good party, and if you want to do something that's both fun and awe-inspiring, how about attending a star-watching party in Arizona? That's right: you can join fellow stargazers at one of several state parks that are perfect dark sky destinations in Arizona. Away from city lights, you'll be able to see the Milky Way and, perhaps, even a shooting star.
Throughout the year, Arizona State Parks host star-watching parties, and there are several scheduled through the winter months. Far away from light pollution, many state parks make stargazing in Arizona a fun and exciting adventure.
So, what can you expect at a Star Party Astronomy Event? Typically a guest presenter will be on hand to tell state park guests what celestial bodies can be seen in the sky on the particular night you're there. Telescopes will be on hand for you to get a close-up look at stars, planets, nebulas, etc. These star parties are open to the public at some of the best places to stargaze in Arizona.
Now, where and when are these Arizona dark sky parties? Well, several state parks offer them on a regular basis including dates in the winter. Here's where you can go:
- Located by the lake in Lake Havasu City, Cattail Cove State Park is one of the state's lesser-known parks. This winter, it will host star parties on Jan. 4 and Mar. 4, 2025.
- Close to Tucson in Oro Valley, Catalina State Park is Arizona's largest state park and will host a star party on Jan. 25, 2025.
- Closest to Phoenix and Scottsdale, Lost Dutchman State Park is a popular park where you'll find the Superstition Mountains. Its stargazing parties will be held this winter on Jan. 4 and Feb. 1, 2025. Registration is required for this program at Lost Dutchman.
- Oracle State Park is a designated International Dark Sky Park located in the foothills of the Santa Catalina Mountains in Oracle just north of Tucson. You may join a stargazing party here on Jan. 4, 2025.
- For those of you looking for a unique Valentine's date idea, how about stargazing with your special person at Pichacho Peak State Park? Located in Pinal County between Casa Grande and Tucson, observe the Arizona night sky on Feb. 14, 2025.
So, how would you like to sit under pitch-dark Arizona skies and gaze up as stars twinkle above you? To me, stargazing has always been a magical experience.
What are some of your favorite dark sky destinations in Arizona? For a place that's close to Scottsdale and Phoenix, I tend to drive to Fountain Hills which is an official International Dark Sky Community.
