Most People Don’t Know There’s A Log Cabin Church Hiding Deep In Alabama’s Woods

Here in Alabama, there are many historic buildings all around us. From homes and restaurants to churches and theaters, the list is endless. One of the oldest buildings is a church that not many people even know about. Why? Because it's hidden deep within one of Alabama's most wooded areas. This church is known as Shoal Creek Church, and it's a true hidden gem. To learn all about this church, including what makes it extra special, take a look below.

Shoal Creek Church is hidden deep within the Talladega National Forest near Edwardsville, Alabama.

After following a winding dirt road, you'll eventually reach this...

...log cabin church, which was built between the years of 1885 and 1890. This is supposedly the third church to be built at this site. The church prior to this one is believed to have been built in 1823.

Because so many members had left to join other congregations, this historic church stopped meeting regularly in 1914.

What makes Shoal Creek Church extra special is that it's one of the few remaining log cabin churches in Alabama. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places on December 4, 1974.

There's also a cemetery that's located next to the church. Most of the gravesites are unmarked. However, there are a couple of gravesites with markings that date all the way back to the early 1800s.
