Don’t get stuck in the same old dinner-and-a-movie date night pattern. It’s boring, it’s redundant, and it’s unoriginal. Instead, wow your partner with one of these Delaware date night ideas and you’ll both be bragging about how much fun you had to anyone that asks.
1. Tour the Delaware Wineries
If you're looking for a good summer wine trail that your date will love, Delaware is the place to be. Start in Marydel, at Harvest Ridge Winery and Rebel Seed Cidery before moving down to Pizzadilli Winery in Felton. After sampling their wines, head to Lewes for the Nassau Valley Winery. Your final destination is near the beach, and watching the sunset on the sand will be the perfect end to your date day.
2. Enjoy Dinner and a Show at Candlelight Theater
Make plans to spend a lovely Delaware date night at the big red barn that is the Candlelight Theater in Arden. Local actors and actresses put on top notch shows here, and they rotate every few weeks. Right now (June 2016) there's a hilarious production of Arsenic and Old Lace that is wildly popular. Later this summer, Candlelight takes on some Broadway classics such as The Music Man and Hairspray. This is a great place to go no matter what the weather is like - oh, and did we mention that the delicious dinner buffet is included in your ticket price? Perfect date night, minimal planning.
3. Climb the Delaware Breakwater Lighthouse
Located in Lewes, the Delaware Breakwater Lighthouse was heavily used by mariners until it was decomissioned in 1996. It changed hands a few times until the Delaware River and Bay Lighthouse Foundation, a non-profit organization, took over ownership. Now, you can climb to the top of the 50' structure and gaze out across the Delaware Bay, taking in some great sights and spotting the Harbor of Refuge Lighthouse across the way. You'll need to make reservations, but your sweetheart will appreciate the view!
4. We shouldn't even tell you about this one...
Head over to Trolley Square, wander around Catherine Rooney's, and look for an antique lantern that's lit - that's your clue that the Hummingbird to Mars is open. Look for the door with a peephole, press the buzzer, and (hopefully) you'll be allowed inside. You'll time travel back to the 1930s as soon as you step into this speakeasy themed 'secret' bar. Listen to jazz as you and your date sip on unique and antique cocktails and take in the vintage art and movie posters on the wall. Be warned - the dress code is enforced, so be sure to arrive in your Sunday best.
5. Watch a movie on Bethany Beach
All summer, the town of Bethany Beach hosts evening Movies on the Beach. What a great Delaware date night! Pack your own movie snacks and bring beach chairs or a blanket and settle in for a classic movie on the sand. You can find the listings on http://www.townofbethanybeach.com
6. Cheer on your favorites at the Winterthur Point-to-Point
This Delaware date will take some planning, as it's a one-time event held every spring at Winterthur. It's an incredibly unique experience, though, so we thought it deserved a mention. You can reserve a parking spot for tailgating, but this isn't the typical beer-and-hotdogs tailgate. Dress up in your most dapper clothing and be sure to pack some wine and cheese to enjoy as you mingle among other guests in a classy atmosphere and enjoy the full day's activities and excitement.
7. Take a scenic drive and picnic on the beach
Here's the ultimate summer Delaware date idea, and it's the simplest of the bunch! Pack up your favorite pinic food and a bottle of wine and head on down to your favorite beach. Find a quiet spot to lay out your blanket and enjoy the sounds of waves crashing in the background while you and your date spend some quality time together.
8. Catch a Concert at The Queen
The Queen Theater was built in 1789 as the Indian Queen Hotel, expanded in 1847, turned into a movie theater in 1916, and closed down in 1959. In 2008, Hal Real (owner of WCL Philadelphia) started working on plans to bring the majestic Queen back to life, and finally, in 2011, WCL at the Queen opened up. Now, the venue is host to national and local artists almost daily. Even if you don't recognize the headliner, bring your date to the happy hour Wed-Friday from 4-6. There, you can pick up a pair of tickets and mingle with discounted drinks and bar food until the show begins. World Cafe Live is known for their attention to sound quality and top-notch talent, so we're sure you'll both have a great time.
9. Be a kid again at Funland
Rehoboth Beach has so many great things to do, but we love heading over to Funland on our Rehoboth beach dates. After all, Funland has been a staple of the Rehoboth Beach scene for over 50 years! Between the Gravatron, Paratrooper and Seadragon, you'll be sure to find the thrills you're seeking! And if you're looking for a calmer date, play the carnival games that are sure to bring out playful competitiveness between you and your date.
10. Tour Dogfish Head Brewery
There's a lot to see at the Dogfish Head Brewery in Milton. Aside from the beer tasting and brewery tours that will show you how this popular beer is made, you'll both enjoy exploring the art gallery and interesting sculptures in and around the building. The Steampunk Treehouse above is just one example of the off-centered art!
