New Haven has been called the cultural capital of Connecticut for its wealth of theatres, museums, and galleries. This downtown area also has a diverse and delicious plethora of eateries. There is one New Haven restaurant that has a long history in the community and even briefly closed its doors in 2015. But public outcry led to its reopening less than a year later and Nutmeggers couldn't be happier.
The beloved Anchor Spa had its humble beginnings in the Elm City as a cocktail club in 1939. It had a long-time following of artists, actors, writers, and Yalies. The restaurant and lounge changed hands several times over the years but remained a fixture on College Street.
After the Anchor Spa's closing in 2015, many mourned the loss of this iconic spot. A new owner arrived on the scene and was able to keep the balance of the old while breathing fresh life into this spot creating a timeless atmosphere where the community and visitors alike could feel at home.
Slide into one of the old-fashioned booths and you can just sense the nostalgia. The shelves are loaded with interesting artifacts giving a firm nod to the restaurant's beginnings in the Great Depression Era.
While the atmosphere hums with times past, the cocktails and food are nothing but modern. Enjoy masterful appetizers, small plates, and dinners that will shower your taste buds with flavor.
Sample the Buffalo Cauliflower Taco for a new twist on a classic cultural favorite. Other small bites we love include the Sweet Potato Cornbread and Smoked Jerk Wings. Expect nothing short of perfection on your plate.
Dive into more filling selections like the Blackened Catfish Po Boy or the newly resurrected Anchor Meatloaf. Delicious pasta and seafood options also grace the menu.
The Anchor Spa lives up to its history bringing creative cocktails to the table every time. Relax and enjoy a mouthwatering meal or a late night bite and cold drink at this 1930's spot in Elm City.
