3 Magical Hidden Gems You Didn’t Know Existed in Lighthouse Point Park
Beautiful butterflies, an antique carousel, and lots of family fun is hiding inside this coastal park.
I have forever been intrigued by lighthouses and actively seek them out whenever I travel to the coast. However, on a recent November visit to a majestic light in New Haven, Connecticut, I discovered some fantastic hidden spots in Lighthouse Point Park that turned out to be equally intriguing as the lighthouse itself. I can’t wait to tell you all about my discoveries. But first, a bit of history about the park.
Why These Hidden Gems in Lighthouse Point Park Are Worth Finding
Lighthouse Point Park is an 82-acre park located right on the waters of New Haven. The park was established in 1924 and quickly became a top sports and recreation spot for local citizens. It is rumored that Ty Cobb and Babe Ruth even played a few games of baseball here. The park has undergone numerous changes in the past century, but continues to be a popular place to swim, boat, or just spend a lovely afternoon by the water.
While many people are initially drawn here by the New Haven Lighthouse, which dates back to 1847, there is so much more to see and do at this lovely seaside oasis. No matter how old or young, you are sure to enjoy this beautiful spot by the sea. When you stop to view the lighthouse, also be sure not to miss these three hidden gems in Lighthouse Point Park.
Three Hidden Gems You Didn’t Know Existed in Lighthouse Point Park
1. Antique Carousel
Who doesn’t love a spin on a classic merry-go-round? The antique carousel at Lighthouse Point Park was unfortunately closed during my off-season visit, but that didn’t stop me from peeking inside the window to gawk at all of the stunning antique horses. The vintage carousel is more than 100 years old and is made up of 70 figures and two chariots. The gorgeous merry-go-round is open on Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays from Memorial Day through Labor Day and costs only fifty cents to ride. It is also available for private rentals.
2. Lighthouse Park Splashpad and Playground
And the carousel isn’t the only place where little ones will be entertained when visiting Lighthouse Point Park. In the summer months, the kids can cool off at the new splashpad, a group of freshwater fountains with water blasters and big buckets of overflowing water. There is also a fun pirate-themed playground that features slides, swings, a suspension bridge, and rope climbers.
3. Birds and Butterflies
Lighthouse Point Park is part of the Atlantic flyway, making it a prime spot for birdwatching. During a visit here, you may be able to view long-tailed ducks, songbirds, hawks, bald eagles, and other birds. Colorful butterflies are also prevalent in the area. An Annual Migration Festival is even held onsite each September.
Best Time to Visit These Hidden Spots in Lighthouse Point Park
Lighthouse Point Park is open daily from 7 am to sunset. While the splashpad and carousel are only in operation during the warm-weather months, the park is worth a visit at any time of the year. My family and I had a blast here during our late autumn visit and even returned a second time that day to experience a festive drive-through holiday light display. The park is also a prime spot to view the 4th of July fireworks. Please note that there are fees for non-resident vehicles. You can find out additional park information at the City of New Haven Lighthouse Point Park website. While you are in New Haven, I suggest sampling some classic "apizza" at one of the many delicious pizza joints in town. And if you are looking for the ultimate unique stay, be sure to check out this pizza-themed vacation rental.
