Everyone In Arizona Should See What’s Inside The Gates Of This Abandoned Zoo
We definitely have our fair share of ghost towns here in Arizona. Some are commercialized and full of tourists while others – like Two Guns – have been left to rot in the desert. Once an iconic stop along Route 66, the attraction was home to two different zoos during its heyday. Now, the only remnants are defunct brick structures and wire cages. Check it out:
Starting as a trading post in the early 19th century, Canyon Lodge became a popular stop for weary travelers along Route 66. Soon after, it was purchased by a veteran of the Spanish-American War, Harry Miller, and renamed "Two Guns."
Miller turned the attraction into a zoo with mountain lions and other animals native to Arizona. He also led tours down into a cave where 42 Apache men had perished during battle.
Following a slew of misfortune, Miller ended up losing ownership of Two Guns. It was bought, sold, and abandoned countless times before a man named Dreher made another attempt at a zoo in 1960.
All was going well until 1971, when a fire devastated the area beyond repair. Nobody else dared take a chance on such cursed land, so ruins are all that remain in this forgotten ghost town.
