This Spot In Wyoming Has One Of The Most Spectacular Views In America
Sunlight Basin in Wyoming offers some of the most spectacular and overlooked views in America.
There's no question that Wyoming has one of the most majestic and surreal landscapes in the country. Everywhere you turn the views are breathtaking. However, there's one place in the Cowboy State that tends to get overlooked. This one amazing spot in Wyoming has the most spectacular views in America. Keep on reading to see for yourself.
This overlooked spot, Sunlight Basin, is located in the most northern part of the Cowboy State in Park County just north of Cody.
To get there, you need to take Wyoming 296, also known as the Chief Joseph Scenic Byway. Wyoming 296 winds southeasterly through the Shoshone National Forest, the Absaroka Mountains, through Dead Indian Pass and crosses Sunlight Bridge.
You can hop on Chief Joseph Scenic Highway just outside of Cody near Heart Mountain. The highway runs right through Sunlight Basin and is kept open year-round; however, winter storms have been known to close the road at times.
The pass got its name from prospectors and fur traders in the early 1800s who were trapped in the mountainous terrain due to dense fog.
All of a sudden a sun-drenched valley appeared to them, and so it was named Sunlight Basin. According to the prospectors, "the only thing that can get into this valley most of the year, is sunlight."
Chief Joseph and his Nez Perce also traveled through Sunlight Basin while attempting to escape from the U.S. Calvary.
The highway crosses into Sunlight Basin at Dead Indian Pass. The elevation here is 8,070 feet, and you cannot beat the beauty of these overlooks in Wyoming.
Sunlight Creek Bridge is the highest bridge in Wyoming. If you don't believe it, walk out on the bridge and look down!
The bridge crosses over Sunlight Gorge which is 1,200 feet deep.
Sunlight Basin is home to a large number of grizzly bears and is home to the only large herd of mountain goats in Wyoming.
Sunlight Basin offers some of the most spectacular views -- not only in Wyoming but in America. Its sheer scenic beauty is absolutely stunning.
