Head To The Mountains Of West Virginia To Visit Betty’s Restaurant, A Charming, Old Fashioned Restaurant

History meets trendy in little Shepherdstown, WV. The oldest town in the state, chartered in 1762 and dotted with well-preserved, colonial-era buildings, Shepherdstown is today home to many modern cultural events and venues, such as the Contemporary American Theater Festival and the Mountain Heritage Arts and Crafts Festival.

And while you're enjoying all this mountain town has to offer, one attraction you do not want to miss is Betty's Restaurant on German Street.

Betty's Restaurant is in tune with the town's modern vibe, yet couched in a quaint, old fashioned setting. Set in the quaint historic downtown district, Betty's has been in operation since 1959, when it was opened by, of course, Betty.

Since then, it has continued to attract a mix of college students (from nearby Shepherd College) and locals with its delicious and inexpensive food in a welcoming, homey environment. Inside, the furnishings haven't appeared to change much over the past 60 years - and neither has the good service and good humor of the staff.

One thing that sets Betty's apart is its unique variety of dishes. Front and center is the breakfast menu - generous portions of country dishes such as sausage gravy (the world's best!), chipped beef gravy, and pancakes, served all day.

Just as attractive are the locally raised eggs, home fries made from freshly peeled potatoes, and biscuits spread with locally produced apple butter.

Yet another rare treat are the crab cakes - fresh and flavorful. But do note that Betty's Restaurant does not accept credit cards. Be prepared to pay for your meal in cash! (There is an ATM available on site.)

So next time you are in Shepherdstown, head to Betty's Restaurant for massive portions of classic, small-town flavor and cheer at prices even the brokest college student can afford! You can learn more about Betty's on facebook.

Of course, as we alluded to earlier, Shepherdstown is home to more than just good food, and here are a few more stops to add to your Shepherdstown bucket list!
