A Mysterious Woodland Trail In Virginia Will Take You To The Original Pyrite Mine Ruins

Who's up for an adventure? Today's destination is one that showcases a fascinating piece of Virginia's mining history. The fact that only ruins of the original Pyrite Mine remain only adds to the allure and the intrigue. We'll head to Prince William Forest State Park and venture down the Pyrite Mine Loop Trail for a wooded adventure you won't soon forget.

The Pyrite Mine Loop Trail is one of the most intriguing hikes in Virginia. This long yet easy trek measures about 7 miles — so plan to spend a majority of the day at the park and bring plenty of water!

Most of this trail meanders through the woods, so it will be shaded for the most part. Along the way, you can look forward to all kinds of interesting sights.

Gentle streams and the occasional waterfall add to the peacefulness of the forest. If you need to cool off, these sections make for great wading pools!

There are also plenty of stream crossings so you won't need to worry about your feet getting wet.

By far the most unique aspect of all is the chance to explore the abandoned ruins of the old Pyrite Mine.

The Pyrite Mine operated between 1889 and 1920. This mineral, also known as Fool's Gold, was profitable as an ingredient in common goods such as glass, soap, bleach, textiles, and paper.

After WWII, the price of pyrite dropped and the workers went on strike. By 1920, the mine was abandoned altogether and all that remains are the ruins you'll find there today.
