5 Totally Kid-Friendly Hikes In Virginia That Are 1 Mile And Under
One of the best ways to experience Virginia is by hiking through it. And while the Old Dominion boasts some truly challenging trails, you’ll be pleasantly surprised to find that there are just as many easy and kid-friendly treks. Your little ones will love the opportunity to explore Virginia’s beautiful landscape without exerting too much energy. The following is a list of five totally kid-friendly hikes that clock in at a mile or less.


Not far from Luray, Virginia, Storybook Trail is every bit as enchanting as it sounds. This out-and-back trail measures just .7 miles and is paved the entire way. The ending point is a beautiful mountain lookout, and there are some additional side trails to explore as well.

Located within Natural Tunnel State Park, Lover's Leap Trail is a short-and-sweet hike that showcases the park's most fascinating natural attractions. The ascent will take you right up to an overlook of the tunnel, which has been noted before as the Eighth Wonder Of The World. The total length of this trail is .6 miles.


Blackrock Trail can be found within Shenandoah National Park, so there will be an entrance fee to access this hike. About 10 minutes from Big Meadows Lodge, this .6-mile trail is doable for nearly all ages and leads to a beautiful view of the Blue Ridge Mountains.

If you love the idea of an easy waterfall trail, you can't do much better than a hike to Logan Creek Falls. This hike is very short -- about .2 miles -- but it is steeper than the others on the list. Visitors should also note that there's no official parking lot, just a small shoulder that can accommodate a few cars. That being said, this beautiful waterfall is certainly worth those obstacles.

Last but not least on our list of kid-friendly hikes in Shelter Trail. Located near Williamsburg, Virginia this easy trail will take visitors on a gentle stroll through Waller Mill Park. It's a great place to spend time in the woods and stretch your legs. Please note that there is a $2 entry fee.
