Virginia’s Winter Forecast Is in (and You’ll Want to Bundle Up)

The winter forecast for 2025-2026 in Virginia largely depends on where in the state you live. But it'll be a good idea to keep those warm layers handy!

Winter weather in Virginia is anything but predictable. From blizzards to unseasonably warm days, it feels like no two winters are exactly the same. But thanks to the Old Farmer's Almanac winter forecast for Virginia, we can do our best to prepare for the months ahead. And this year looks like it will bring a bit of everything. My advice? Make sure you have all of your favorite winter layers handy; the forecast includes everything from mild days to frigid, potentially snowy ones.

There's no doubt about it: Virginia is beautiful in the winter. And yet, frosty temperatures and harsh winds can make those cold months seem to drag on and on. While the Old Farmer's Almanac winter weather predictions for Virginia say it will be mostly mild, we'll still see some cold and higher-than-usual snowfall in parts of the state. Virginia averages 17 inches of snow annually, although exact totals depend on where you live.

The winter is expected to be the mildest for those living in the Atlantic Corridor, where temperatures are forecast to be slightly above average and snowfall slightly below average. In Northern Virginia, cold spells are expected, with slightly drier conditions. The Appalachian region is where winter will really make itself known; those who live in this region should expect colder-than-average temperatures with heavier snowfall predicted for southwestern Virginia. The periods when snow is most likely include late December, late January, and early February.

When it snows, take advantage by getting outside. My favorite way to spend a snowy day, when I lived in Lexington, was to stroll downtown, stop for a slice of homemade pie at a local bakery, and enjoy the snowy scenery. A winter walk, ice skating, snow tubing, and hiking are just a few of the many winter activities in Virginia.

The coldest temperatures of the winter are forecasted from mid to late December and again at the beginning and the end of January.

Before the cold weather arrives, start preparing. Keep your car stocked with essentials, including a first aid kit, phone chargers, blankets or extra clothes, an ice scraper, salt, water, and snacks.

Overall, this winter won't be uneventful, but it shouldn't be unbearable. To play it safe, be sure to bundle up and make sure your gear is water-resistant.
