Maybe we're a bit biased, but we believe that Virginia is home to some of the best colleges and universities around. Not only are these institutions architecturally beautiful, but many are also centuries old, offering a glimpse of history. In that spirit, we're headed to one of the most charming college towns in Virginia. It's tucked away in the mountains and features not just one but two impressive schools. Have you guessed which of the splendid college towns in Virginia we're talking about yet? Lexington, of course!
Surrounded by the beautiful Shenandoah Valley awaits one of the most picture-perfect small towns in our state.
Lexington is perhaps most famous for being home to two top-notch schools: Washington & Lee University is the oldest, having been established in 1749.
Just next door is another historic landmark: Virginia Military Institute. VMI, as it's known, was established in 1839.
Being home to these two institutions certainly makes Lexington the quintessential small college town. A walking tour of downtown will reveal the local coffee shops, galleries, and restaurants that have stood the test of time.
After you've toured both campuses, but sure to stop by Salerno's for a slice of pizza. After all, no visit to a college town is complete without checking out the local pizza spot.
Need to stretch your legs? The Chessie Trail runs alongside the Maury River for about seven miles and connects Lexington to the nearby town of Buena Vista.
One of the best parts about Lexington is just how many destinations you'll discover in the surrounding area.
Great Valley Farm Brewery is a great place to enjoy a local craft beer with quite a view!
To cap off your visit, be sure to check out the local drive-in movie theater, Hull's Drive-In. Now you've officially completed your tour of one of Virginia's most adorable college towns!
