Living in Virginia means enjoying some of the best outdoor attractions in the world. Perhaps we're a bit biased, but we never tire of discovering new natural spaces to explore. Today's destination is one that will completely immerse you in a rugged landscape filled with an epic waterfall, mountain views, and canyon overlooks. Located near Pembroke, Virginia, the Cascades National Recreation Trail features some of the most stunning scenery in Virginia. This relatively uncrowded hiking trail through the Jefferson National Forest is one you won't soon forget.
Those who have hiked the trail typically recommend taking the lower trail along the creek up to the Cascades Waterfall.
This 66-foot waterfall alone is worth the adventure, but you'll want to continue hiking to explore even more gorgeous scenery.
If you decide to turn around after the waterfall, the trip will be approximately four miles round-trip.
Continuing along to Barney's Wall will prolong the hike, but it's definitely worth the added effort!
The view from Barney's Wall is positively breathtaking. You'll definitely want to bring a camera and spend time appreciating this stunning lookout!
If you do plan on hiking all the way to Barney's Wall, you should note that the round-trip adventure is just over seven miles. You'll need to pack plenty of water and some food to keep you sustained.
No matter how much of this trail you choose to enjoy, you'll cherish every minute spent in this beautiful corner of the Jefferson National Forest.
