Crabtree Falls VA is one of Virginia's most famous natural wonders. The tallest series of cascading waterfalls east of the Mississippi River, this landmark is one that belongs on every outdoor enthusiast's bucket list. Yet what makes this waterfall so special is the fact that visitors can actually climb alongside it via a beautiful stairway trail in Virginia. When we embarked on this trail, we were absolutely floored by the sights and sounds of the cascading falls. Let's just say this is an outdoor adventure you won't soon forget!
Located just six miles off of the Blue Ridge Parkway is one of the region's most stunning attractions: Crabtree Falls.
Totaling a distance of 1,200 feet, the spectacular falls consist of five major cascades and a handful of smaller ones that tumble downward in the most mesmerizing fashion.
Fortunately, the first major observation point is just a few hundred feet from the main parking area via a paved, accessible trail.
For those seeking more of an adventure, the Crabtree Falls Trail won't disappoint. This unique stairway trail will lead you to various overlooks of the waterfall.
The stairs definitely pose a challenge, but there's so much to see as you ascend them that you won't mind too much.
Each overlook is carefully designated, and you'll want to be sure to stay on the trail at all times. Safety is crucial.
The top of the trail leads to perhaps the most striking view of all: a panoramic perspective of the Tye River Valley. Be sure to take your time to admire the scenery and catch your breath.
While summer and fall are popular times to visit, winter can be lovely also. Just look at these views!
On your way back down the trail, you'll get to retrace your steps and enjoy spectacular waterfall views a second time.
Just be sure to be mindful of other hikers along the way. We took the trail on a Saturday morning and it was quite crowded! You can catch a glimpse of the magic that awaits you on this trail when you watch the brief YouTube video below, courtesy of Historic Forrest:
