8 Reasons That Vermont Is The Most Terrifying, Spookiest State
The leaves have fallen and the silhouettes are providing the perfect backdrop for a campfire horror story. If you don’t think that Vermont is the perfect place for a scary story, here are 8 reasons why you’ll find that the spookiest state is VT. Do you dare venture out after dark?
1. Green Mount Cemetery
The legends of the statue named Black Agnes vary, but one thing is always the same: something bad will happen if you sit in her lap. Depending on who tells the story, the unlucky person will encounter three instances of bad luck, have an uncountable amount of bad luck, or die within seven days. Perhaps it's best just to avoid the statue altogether.
2. Bowman House, Shrewsbury
The apparition of a women, believed to be Mrs. Bowman, has been seen here. Legend has it that those who stand in a dark stain at the top of the stairs develop an intense feeling of foreboding. Also, the spirits here don’t stand for misbehaving! It is said that a visiting child who stuck out her tongue at a picture was punished when the picture flew off the wall and struck her.
3. Shanty on the Shore
This popular restaurant in Burlington has an interesting, and creepy, past. In 1833, Issac Nye ran a successful general store on the Burlington waterfront. He closed his shop and only left to attend funerals, whether he knew the deceased or not. When Nye himself died, he requested that his shop (which was closed for 30 years) be opened and his funeral take place there with Nye laid on the counter.

5. Glastenbury Mountain
There have been several disappearances that have taken place here, so would you take the chance and visit? Especially since the people were never found? Yikes!
6. Brattleboro Retreat
Built in 1834 as the Vermont Asylum for the Insane, this place is believed to be haunted. Most of the hauntings are reported to come from the tower, which was built by the patients. Once it was finished, patients went to the top and jumped to their death. Could these be the ghosts haunting the retreat?
This may appear to be a luxury hotel (and it is!) but it's also said to be the most haunted hotel in Vermont. Stay there if you dare!
8. Emily's Bridge

Many people swear they have experienced the ghost of Emily while they drove through this haunted bridge. Scratches on cars and other phenomenons have taken place at the site of this jilted lover's place of death.
