When many people head to Flaming Gorge, it is to spend some time on the water, hike, or even camp. But, what about a scenic drive in Utah? This area is home to the Flaming Gorge-Uintas National Scenic Byway and it may be one of the most underrated adventures in the Beehive State. This route winds through forests, past geological formations, and in areas rich with wildlife and remarkable views. Whether you drive the entire route or you simply explore a small section, it’s an adventure you are never going to forget.
The Flaming Gorge-Uintas National Scenic Byway takes you along U.S. Highway 191 and Utah Highway 44 between Vernal and Manila. This is one drive where you won’t want to forget a camera.
As you drive, keep your eyes out for wildlife. This byway is nicknamed “wildlife through the ages,” and for good reason. You will travel through areas that are home to creatures big and small.
If you complete this route in its entirety, you will travel approximately 82 miles one way. Plan for at least two hours to complete your journey before you turn around and head back home.
Along the way, you will pass by 15 interpretive sites. You will find these sites in various pullouts and with signs that tell you all about the area, its geology, history, and so much more.
And take your time as you follow along the ridgelines of Flaming Gorge Reservoir. The views here are hard to beat and this drive gives you a new love for this breathtaking area.
As you travel, you will explore the beautiful forests of the Uinta Mountains. Feel free to stop and enjoy the mountain views, small streams, and lakes. You will also find several hiking trails and campgrounds along your way as well.
As you make your way closer to Vernal, keep in mind that you are in dinosaur territory so you’ll drive by areas where dinosaur bones can easily be found in the rock layers.
You can make exploring this scenic byway in Utah a full-day adventure or an afternoon drive. Either way, it’s one experience you need to have at least once.
