When many Utahns think of natural wonders and incredible places to explore, they head down south to the red rocks and warm weather. But, located in northern Utah and straddling the Utah-Wyoming state line is one destination that deserves just as much love — Flaming Gorge National Recreation Area. This massive reservoir is an outdoor lover’s paradise with countless activities for the entire family. Whether you stay on the Utah side or you venture into Wyoming, this is one natural area that is worth a spot at the top of your bucket list.
Located in northeastern Utah and straddling the Utah-Wyoming state line is Flaming Gorge Reservoir. While the majority of this reservoir lies in Wyoming, the canyon and recreation area are located in Utah as well.
Flaming Gorge Reservoir is an impressive 91 miles long and features 360 miles of shoreline — it is certainly not small and it's the perfect destination for a day out on the water. During the summer months, this is a popular destination for boating, jet skiing, kayaking, and simply playing on the shore.
Flaming Gorge Reservoir is also a haven for fishermen. The water of this reservoir typically stays quite cold, even in the middle of summer, creating perfect living conditions for trout and other fish. In fact, many record-breaking fish have been caught in this massive body of water.
But, the reservoir isn’t the only reason to venture to Flaming Gorge National Recreation Area. Throughout this massive area, you will find more than 43 campgrounds, resulting in a total of 700 individual campsites and 27 group campsites.
Here in Utah, there are also small towns nearby, such as Manila and Dutch John, where you will find hotels and vacation rentals if you aren’t in the mood to “rough it.”
Stop by the Red Canyon Visitor’s Center in Manila as well. Here, you can capture incredible views of the canyon and reservoir, participate in interactive activities, learn about the history of the area, and even discover some of the best hiking trails and overlooks in the area.
The Canyon Rim Trail is a popular option that takes you between the Red Canyon Visitor Center and the Greendale Overlook. This trail does have a few challenging elements and is 3.5 miles. However, the views are going to take your breath away.
No matter whether you spend your time in Wyoming or Utah when visiting Flaming Gorge National Recreation Area, you are in for a treat. Breathtaking scenery, countless activities, and campsites galore — this is one destination that should never be overlooked.
