8 Country Roads In Wyoming That Are Pure Bliss In The Fall
Wyoming offers eight stunning scenic drives that showcase dramatic landscapes and vibrant fall colors.
Fall or not, Wyoming boasts a whole host of scenic drives full of dramatic landscapes. But when you couple the dramatic landscape along with the colorful changing leaves, then the scenery becomes an artistic masterpiece. There are just no words that adequately describe the beauty of these roads! Here are our picks for eight of the best scenic drives in Wyoming:
1. Beartooth Highway
The Beartooth Highway runs along the Montana/Wyoming border. The highest part of the highway levels off into a wide plateau at the top of Beartooth Pass, and then it descends and hooks up with Wyoming Highway 296 - or Chief Joseph Scenic Byway - near Cooke City. The Absaroka-Beartooth Wilderness Area borders much of the route, so you can imagine how beautiful the fall colors are at the top of the pass looking down.
2. Signal Mountain Summit Road
Signal Mountain Road is only about 5 miles long and takes 20 minutes to climb. Trailers and RVs are prohibited along this narrow stretch, so please plan accordingly. At the top you can enjoy panoramic views of the Teton Range, Jackson Hole Valley and Jackson Lake. The aspens along the drive are stunning along with the scenery from the two overlooks that provide views of the valley.
3. Cloud Peak Skyway
Cloud Peak Skyway snakes through the southern section of the Big Horn National Forest from Buffalo, over Powder River Pass, down into Ten Sleep Canyon and on into the towns of Ten Sleep and Worland. The Skyway provides great views of the Cloud Peak Wilderness, Big Horn National Forest, the Big Horn Mountains and Cloud Peak. There are also very scenic gravel roads off of the main road such as Elgin Park and Pole Creek Road that are just breathtaking when the leaves are at their peak.
4. US 89/191/287
US 89/191/287 runs from Moran Junction to Flagg Ranch. Pictured are the fall colors from the highway looking east in
Grand Teton National Park, Wyoming. The fall colors in contrast to the alpine trees are spectacular.
5. US Highway 191 - Little Mountain
Little Mountain is located in southwestern Wyoming about 40 miles south of Rock Springs. The mountain is known for its outstanding hunting, fishing and fall colors. The drive along US Highway 191 into Little Mountain is gorgeous in the fall.
6. WY-251 S To Beartrap Meadow, Casper Mountain
Another beautiful fall drive is along WY-251 S to Beartrap Meadow. The meadow is a large open space at the base of the road leading to the eastern portion of the mountain. In the fall, the trees in this area are full of color in late September into October.
7. Aspen Alley
Aspen Alley is a large grove of aspen located between Baggs and Encampment. During the fall with the leaves changing, this drive is absolutely stunning. Striking color lines both sides of the road.
8. Highway 110 To Devils Tower
The drive along Highway 110 to Devils Tower is like something that is out of this world. But in the fall with the yellows and oranges framing the tower, it's a sight to behold.
