There’s a lot to discover on Door County’s Washington Island – beautiful beaches, historic buildings, and scenic views. But, you need some transportation. Some people opt to take their cars to the island via ferry; others bring their bikes over. But for a carefree – and car free – adventure in Wisconsin, consider hopping aboard one of the best train rides in Wisconsin, the Viking Train. This open air train ride in Wisconsin will take you to some of the island’s best sites and you can leave the driving to someone else. With the Viking Train tours, you can spend more time taking in the beauty of the island and less time looking at maps. Here’s what you need to know about this unique open air train ride in Wisconsin.
To board the train, you’ll first need to get to the island. The Island Clipper is the fastest way to get you there. This passenger ferry departs from Gills Rock, and it’s a quick ride across the famous Death’s Door passage to the island. The ferry doesn’t carry cars, but thanks to the Viking Train, you won’t need one.
The ride across the passage is incredibly scenic and, despite the name, very safe - the Island Clipper has been making this trip for decades and every season it ferries scores of travelers across.
Washington Island is located about seven miles off the tip of the Door County Peninsula. It’s about five miles wide by six miles long, and it has a permanent population of about 700 residents.
Once you step off the ferry, you’ll be steps away from your next ride – the Viking Train. Viking Train tours, which feature open-air cars, are the perfect way to see the island, while enjoying a bit of lake breeze. On cooler days, you’ll want to bring a jacket.
The train will take you to one of the best beaches in Wisconsin – Schoolhouse Beach. The beach is lined with smooth stones, and a shipwreck is located just offshore.
It will also pass the Stavekirrke, a structure patterned after an ancient Norwegian church, and Mann's Mercantile, a store where you can pick up some souvenirs to help you remember your trip to the island.
