Escape to These Charming Mountain Towns in West Virginia Before Fall Ends

These charming mountain towns in West Virginia come alive every fall and they're perfect for an autumnal adventure.

I think we can all agree that West Virginia’s mountain towns are a beautiful sight, regardless of the time of year. That being said, there’s truly something magical about visiting them in the fall! Whether you’re a leaf peeper or just looking to enjoy a relaxing weekend with a beautiful view, these charming mountain towns in West Virginia are just the ticket to an autumnal adventure.

1. Lewisburg

Sitting pretty in the hills of the Greenbrier Valley, Lewisburg is the poster child for small-town charm. Lewisburg has a thriving downtown scene filled with shops, restaurants, and plenty of friendly people. The Lost World Caverns are a must-see while you’re here. The caverns were discovered in 1942, and visitors can descend 120 feet below ground to explore a vast wonderland of rock formations, stalagmites, and stalactites. The self-guided tour can take as long as you want, just remember to stay on the trail. The caverns remain a constant 52 degrees, so bring a jacket!

2. Berkeley Springs

Heading over to the Eastern Panhandle, Berkeley Springs may have a population of around 1,000 residents, but it draws a large crowd. Known for its historic mineral springs and artistic attractions, the crown jewel of this town is Berkeley Springs State Park. Kick back and enjoy a spa day at the park while relaxing in those warm mineral springs.

Nearby, Cacapon Resort State Park is a fabulous place for a fall hike. The park boasts 23 miles of hiking trails to explore, and each one will lead you to a spectacular view.

3. Harpers Ferry

Of course, wandering through the fall foliage is the name of the game this time of year. The Maryland Heights Trail is one of the best hiking trails in the state, offering an unforgettable view of Harpers Ferry.

4. Hinton

With a population that hovers around 2,200 residents, Hinton might just be the charming mountain town. Despite its smaller size, you’ll find plenty of things to do in Hinton. Natural beauty has a hold on Hinton, as the city is where the New, Greenbrier, and Bluestone rivers merge. It’s an idyllic location for aquatic adventures like whitewater rafting and kayaking.

For those who prefer to keep their feet on the ground, Hinton’s proximity to the New River Gorge National Park makes it the perfect mountain town for hiking. The New River Gorge in the fall is, without question, a bucket list adventure.
