And while there are many, many scenic drives to be found throughout the state, one of the most versatile is the scenic route known as the Midland Trail, or Route 60, in West Virginia -- especially the segments along this curvy road that are extra full of scenic mountain stops like the portion that passes right by Cathedral Falls in Gauley Bridge, West Virginia.

Of all the beautiful waterfalls in wild, wonderful, West Virginia, Cathedral Falls is the fairest of them all.

Framed in a stunning, bowl-like amphitheater, Cathedral Falls plunges an impressive 60 feet.

It's a popular destination, well known (and rightly so) as a worthwhile stop conveniently located right along the road.

But what's less talked about is the drive TO Cathedral Falls.

The scenic Midland Trail that runs right past Cathedral Falls is a gorgeous jaunt through West Virginia, past mountain after mountain and around curve after curve.

Consider the approach to Cathedral Falls from the east.

Not far before the falls, you'll pass Hawks Nest State Park. Learn a little roadside history with a quick stop at this unique state park.
