Elkins, West Virginia is a medium sized town of about 7,000 people located deep in the mountains of West Virginia. This town is dedicated to preserving Appalachian culture and passing on its history to the next generation.
Elkins is able to preserve countless mountain traditions thanks to the Davis and Elkins College.
Students come here have the chance to study traditional music and Appalachian culture.
The Augusta Heritage Center is part of the college, and offers classes in traditional crafts to the community.
The Heritage Center also hosts concerts and dances.
Each year, Elkins celebrates its mountain heritage with the Mountain State Forest Festival.
The festivities take place in October throughout the city. You'll find food, music, games, and contests like this lumberjack competition.
Elkins is home to many great restaurants, like the Forks Inn.
The restaurant sits on top of a mountain, providing amazing views while you eat!

No visit to Elkins is complete without a trip to the Elkins Depot.
You can take a ride on the Durbin & Greenbrier Valley Railroad, or just enjoy watching the trains roll by.
