11 Underrated Washington Towns That Deserve A Second Look

There's something for everyone in Washington... but we must admit, some of our more tourist-friendly towns (we're looking at you, Leavenworth) tend to steal the spotlight sometimes. And while Bavarian villages and urban attractions are delightful, Washington is also home to some beloved towns that are highly underrated.

1. Oak Harbor

When it comes to Whidbey Island, Langley tends to get more press. But Oak Harbor, which is located at the north end of the island, has its own unique appeal. Not only has it been ranked one of the safest cities in Washington, it's surrounded by incredible parks.

2. Ephrata

You'd be hard-pressed to find a more charming farming community than this Columbia Basin gem. Catch a show over a pizza at the Lee Theater, learn about local history at the Grant County Historical Museum and grab a shake or a Polar Swirl at DK's Drive-In.

3. Camas

There's a lot to love about this small town, which you'll find in Clark County near the Columbia River. The beautiful tree-lined streets, unique boutiques and tasty eateries (like Twilight Pizza Bistro) never fail to impress visitors.

4. Colfax

Most people don't pay much attention to the tiny town they pass through on their way to Pullman or Palouse, but Colfax is definitely a charming place. Take some time to enjoy some historic sites, like The Perkins House, and enjoy a meal at the Top Notch Cafe.

5. Chewelah

Located in Stevens County, this underrated Eastern Washington gem is a delightful place to visit and live. When the weather permits, walking through the downtown area is thoroughly enjoyable, and a stop at the

Quartzite Brewing Company is a must for beer drinkers.

6. Ferndale

Nestled up in the northwest corner of Washington is Ferndale, a relatively small community that will steal your heart. Between Pioneer Park (which features 11 authentic pioneer cabins), the delicious Twin Sisters Creamery and the Riverwalk Trail at Centennial Riverwalk Park (pictured here), this is the perfect place to relax.

7. Des Moines

It may only be a few miles south of Seattle, but this little waterfront city feels like a different world. Saltwater State Park sits right on the shores of Puget Sound, and Salty's at Redondo Beach is the perfect place to catch a sunset over seafood.

8. Naches

Naches tends to live in Yakima's shadow, but this quiet community at the foothills of the Cascades has its own unique character. The Boulder Cave Trail is a must for nature lovers, while the

Naches Heights Vineyard has a great tasting room.

9. Twisp

Often referred to as the heart of the Methow Valley, Twisp is located near Winthrop, and it's equally as pleasant. While it's often tough to reach in the winter, Twisp looks as beautiful dusted with snow as it does bathed in sunshine.

10. Gig Harbor

This beautiful waterfront city is located near Tacoma, and it's absolutely delightful. It's mid-sized in population but maintains a small-town feel, and it's the one place in the state you can see both by trolley and gondola.

11. Cashmere

Cashmere is sometimes overshadowed by the nearby Leavenworth and Chelan, but this little city on the banks of the scenic Wenatchee River is worth devoting a day to checking out. Cashmere is where our internationally known aplets and cotlets are made, and they also feature a world-class historical museum.
