The big day may be approaching, but that doesn't mean you can't plan a last-minute Christmas trip in Washington. For a low-key holiday outing, I recommend going up to Bellingham. This charming college town is jam-packed with delightful yuletide recreation. It's also the perfect place to find those stocking stuffers you haven't found yet!
Western Washington isn't known for its white Christmases; for that, you'll have to pop across the mountains beyond the rain shadow and its drizzle. Still, located just south of the Canadian border, Bellingham usually receives around nine inches of snow each year. If you're lucky enough to catch it with a dusting of frost on the ground, you'll see the town transformed into a wintery retreat.
Window shopping has never been more dazzling than during December when the entire town participates in the Shine Bright Window Display Competition. Stay into the evening to see the Christmas tree lit up downtown at the Depot Market Square.
On Christmas Eve, check out the 44th Holiday Festival of the Arts! This Whatcom County event celebrates the work of talented local artisans and is a fantastic place for finding one-of-a-kind gifts.
Need to fuel up? Stop by Chocolate Necessities & Gelato near the Whatcom Museum. In my opinion, this spot is unmatched for indulgent goodies. Try the sipping chocolate, a sophisticated style of hot chocolate. Your taste buds won't regret it!
For the outdoorsy among us, plan a stroll through Whatcom Falls Park. While this gem is particularly stunning on a snowy day, it's just as enchanting on a crisp winter afternoon.
Some local restaurants, such as Lighthouse Bar and Grill, are open both Christmas Eve and Christmas Day! Located in the Hotel Bellwether, this elegant spot hosts a sumptuous buffet to be enjoyed with a jaw-dropping Northwest view.
Visiting this friendly Washington community is sure to put you in the holiday spirit. It may just become your new seasonal tradition!
If you're planning a last-minute Christmas trip in Washington, I recommend visiting Bellingham. This northern college town has all the ingredients for a memorable holiday excursion. Come for the diverting holiday markets and stay for the indulgent cocoa. You'll fall in love with this charming community, its passion for uplifting local arts, and its laid-back attitude.
Hoping to escape your relatives? Maybe an unexpected "flat tire" marooned you there over the weekend! The in-laws don't need to know the truth and we won't tell them.
