Welcome to Smithfield! Located on the water in the South Hampton Roads region of Virginia, this town is as historic as it is scenic.
The town is situated on the south side of the James River, just south of Jamestown. It was first colonized in 1634.
Before then, Native American cultures knew the area as Native Americans knew this area as Warascoyak, also spelled Warrosquoyacke, which means "point of land."
One of the most historic sites in Smithfield is St. Luke's Church, built in 1632.
The church is recognized as a National Historic Landmark and its architecture is absolutely beautiful.
Another place to see is the Schoolhouse Museum, which is a historic site dedicated to preserving the history of African American education in Isle of Wight County.
After a morning of sightseeing, head to Cure Coffeehouse for a pick-me-up. It's just one of many delightful cafes and restaurants in Smithfield.
Or, if you happen to be visiting during the weekend, don't miss out on the popular local Farmer's Market.
