1. Belle Isle State Park

Our ultimate hidden gems road trip in Virginia starts in the eastern portion of the state in beautiful Lancaster County. Belle Isle State Park encompasses over 700 acres where visitors can enjoy hiking, kayaking, boating, and appreciating the Northern Neck at its finest. The crown jewel of the park is the Rappahannock River, which stretches particularly wide here. Learn more about all there is to do at Belle Isle State Park in Virginia.

2. Historic Polegreen Church

The Historic Polegreen Church is a hidden gem both for its beautiful architecture and also for its cultural significance. The church that once stood here was planned in 1748 and completed by 1764. The preacher, Samuel Davis, is remembered for his efforts to teach enslaved people how to read. Although the church was burned down, architect Carlton Abbott installed the frames of this "ghost church" in memory of the civil rights efforts that took place here. 3. Barboursville Ruins

Many people don't think of ruins when they think of Virginia, but it's true that many ruins of historic buildings still exist today. A prime example would be the site of the Barboursville Ruins outside of Charlottesville. Barboursville was once the home of James Barbour, Virginia's governor during the War of 1812. Its eight-room layout and octagonal drawing-room were the ideas of Thomas Jefferson, who designed this grand home. Unfortunately, there was a fire on Christmas Day in 1884, leaving only the ruins you'll find today. You can tour the grounds while also stopping for a taste of wine at Barboursville Vineyards. Ready to call it a day? You can stay the night at the Oakhurst Inn, a charming 1920s home converted into the most beautiful bed & breakfast.

4. White Oak Lavender Farm

The next stop on our itinerary is as beautiful as it is fragrant. White Oak Lavender Farm and the Purple WOLF Tasting Room are the perfect places to spend an hour or two on a sunny afternoon. Whether you're perusing the lavender field, checking out some of the local products in the gift store, or sampling lavender ice cream (or even wine!), you'll be delighted by this destination.

5. Virginia Safari Park

Our next hidden gem destination is something totally out-of-the-ordinary. The Virginia Safari Park is home to all kinds of beautiful creatures, some of which are native to Virginia and some that are typically found worlds away. This drive-through safari park will delight all ages. From the comfort of your car, you can interact with the animals and even feed them. Be warned, though, some of the animals are a little slobbery, so and your car may need a wash afterward! Learn more about the lovable Virginia Safari Park.

6. Carvins Cove

Carvins Cove can only be described as a magical mountain lake, although it's technically a reservoir. For a fun adventure, you can rent kayaks and paddle along the devastatingly blue water. Or, if you'd like to admire it from a totally different perspective, you can hike Tinker Cliffs and enjoy the view photographed above. Here's more information on hiking Tinker Cliffs in Virginia.

7. The Mill Mountain Star

Last but not least on our itinerary for exploring hidden gems in Virginia is the Mill Mountain Star. What better way to end a glorious road trip than by hiking to the largest free-standing light-up star in the country? Mill Mountain in Roanoke also offers some of the best views in the region, and you'll feel accomplished in many ways once you reach this hidden gem of a destination.
