What stands today as a shell of a building was once an esteemed mansion designed by Thomas Jefferson himself.

The mansion belonged to James Barbour, who was governor of Virginia during the War of 1812.

What set this home apart was its unique 8-room layout, multiple two-story chambers, and even an octagonal drawing room.

Sadly, the home was devastated by fire on Christmas Day of 1884. The flames destroyed everything except the brick walls, columns, and interior masonry partitions.

Fortunately, it's still possible to see the ruins today. While visiting them is a haunting experience, there's something undeniably alluring about what remains.
