Virginia is one of the best road trip states around. You could feasibly start in the mountains and make your way all the way to the beach before the day's end. The only setback to these trips is the cost of gas. Even though gas is cheaper than it's been in previous years, it's always something to keep an eye on. So we've devised a road trip through some of the state's amazing places that can actually be completed on just one tank of gas. The average car gets around 350-400 miles per tank, and this road trip will take you 354 miles in a full loop. Let's get going! (For the interactive map, click here.)
1. Bluegrass Grill & Bakery
Our first destination begins in the lovely Charlottesville, VA. It's a great place to start the day, considering all the fabulous breakfast and coffee shops around. Bluegrass Grill & Bakery is a local favorite, offering hearty and delicious breakfast combos that'll really hit the spot. Photographed above is a dish called the Hungry Norman.
2. Humpback Rock
After fueling up on a delicious breakfast, you'll be ready to conquer the world. Or at least a challenging scramble up Humpback Rocks, one of the more popular trails along the Blue Ridge Parkway. In just two miles, this hike packs quite a punch and promises a breathtaking view of the Blue Ridge Mountains.
3. Clementine
After your hike, you'll probably be ready for a delicious lunch. Thank goodness your next destination is Harrisonburg, which has more than a few excellent lunch spots. Clementine offers a little bit of everything, from a shrimp and grits appetizer, to fried catfish, to incredible falafel sandwiches.
3. Woodstock Tower
The Woodstock Tower is another breathtaking view of the Shenandoah Valley that doesn't require QUITE as much scrambling. That being said, the drive up to the top of the mountain is pretty intense. Just know that the panorama from the top of the tower will be well worth your adventure.
4. Museum of the Shenandoah Valley
The next stop on the trip is the Museum of the Shenandoah Valley, a wonderful display of the area's culture and heritage. In addition to the galleries, there are also beautiful gardens to wander through.
5. Gadsby's Tavern
Established in the 1700s, Gadsby's Tavern has been a traveller's resting stop for many years, and now you can join along in the tradition. For a little pick-me-up, the pub has plenty of tavern fare and original brews. Just be sure to indulge responsibly, as there are still some more miles to cover. And if you've got some extra time, be sure to explore the historic streets of Old Town Alexandria.
6. Foode
And finally, our one-gas-tank trip concludes at Fredericksburg's Foode. This incredibly popular spot will be the perfect place to reflect back on the day's trip and enjoy some of the finest food in town. Whether you're in the mood for down-home southern fare or something lighter, such as the above Caribbean Bowl, you'll be sure to enjoy a quality meal. There's plenty to do in the town of Fredericksburg after dinner, and you can stretch your legs after the drive or even catch a movie.
