The Small Virginia Town Locals Hope Stays Off Tourists’ Radar
Tucked away on a bend in the river, Scottsville has everything we love about a small Virginia town.
A peaceful river town tucked away along the James River, Scottsville has everything you could hope for in a small town: beautiful scenery, impressive history, access to the great outdoors, and some phenomenal small businesses. Add the fact that it remains relatively undiscovered, and you've got all the makings of a town so wonderful, locals could be forgiven for wanting to keep it a secret. Of course, visitors are always welcome in Scottsville—just be sure to slow down, shop local, and embrace the rhythm of this quiet town in Virginia.
Why This Virginia Small Town Flies Under the Radar

Scottsville's unique location and geography allow it to fly so freely under the radar. For one, it's located less than an hour from Charlottesville, which is a popular tourist spot for hiking, wineries, historic sites, and more. It's also within driving distance of the Blue Ridge Parkway and Shenandoah National Park, two other major tourist sites that seem to draw all the visitors. This means that Scottsville developed around a community and local population as opposed to being catered to travelers and tourism. The result? Lots of local businesses, very few chain restaurants or hotels, and a lack of fluctuating crowds.
What Makes This Small Town So Special
A lot of Scottsville's identity boils down to its unique history. Its location on the river made it crucial to the state's economy, as it was home to a vital river port. In the mid-nineteenth century, the town saw immense commercial success, thanks to the tobacco trade, which relied heavily on the forced labor of enslaved people. In 1865, the town was largely destroyed by Union troops, though reconstruction efforts helped restore its identity as a resilient river town. Today, the town still holds its history close but has evolved into a truly special place on the bank of the James.
Best Things to Do in This Quiet Small Town
I've visited Scottsville a handful of times, and I'm always in awe of its quiet beauty. Not long ago, I took a guided batteau river cruise with James River Batteau Company, which gave me a newfound appreciation for the region's history. (I highly recommend signing up for a guided sunset cruise!) When you're ready for a bite to eat, head to Red Rose Pub or Tavern on the James. Another must? Canal Basin Square. Located at the original location of the James River and Kanawha Canal Basin, this beautiful historical park outlines the region's river history. It covers everything from batteaux, canal boats, packet boats, and even major flooding events that the town has endured. When you're ready to call it a night, you might consider some riverfront camping at Horseshoe Flats Campground.
No matter if you're looking to visit for a day or perhaps even relocate, you'll agree that Scottsville is the kind of place you'll want to keep secret. Learn more when you visit the official Scottsville tourism bureau.
