4 Small Towns in Virginia So Dreamy, You’ll Swear You’ve Seen Them on TV
Virginia is for lovers and these dreamy small towns are guaranteed to sweep you off your feet and make for a movie plot line that you'll have to experience to believe.
Small towns are the backbone of America, and I’m convinced that Virginia has some of the most underrated, dreamy small towns in the whole country. Many of the state’s small towns are tucked away in verdant mountains and coastal corners that deserve their own spot on the big screen. Here’s where you should go in search of your next small town escape:
1. Cape Charles

Cape Charles is an idyllic small town of around 1,000 residents that lies on a peninsula bordered by the Chesapeake Bay. Boasting a pristine beach, Victorian architecture, and a picturesque harbor, the Cape Charles way of life appreciates life by the water. Take advantage of this coastal town’s charm by grabbing a coffee from the cozy Cape Charles Coffee House, getting out on the water and trying stand-up paddleboarding or kayaking, and perhaps taking a walk around the Cape Charles Natural Area Preserve. Exploring the town’s historic district will make you feel like you’re on the set of a Nicholas Sparks movie.
2. Clarksville

Clarksville is an outdoor lover’s paradise, complete with lakeside views and plenty of opportunities for fun recreation activities with its 50,000 acres of water to make your playground. The natural beauty of Clarksville was shaped by the damming of the Roanoke River in the 1950s, which led to the town’s signature Buggs Island Lake. On Virginia’s largest lake, try your hand at some crappie and largemouth bass fishing, and be sure to explore the town itself to enjoy some good brews on the craft beverage trail. While you're at it, stop into some local shops such as The Cottage Barn and The Corner at Two One Six to grab some eclectic gifts. The lake country will surely welcome you with open arms as you embrace its small town wonders. If you're visiting in July, be sure to check out the annual LakeFest, a cherished celebration that the town hosts, where you can watch hot air balloons drift over the lake and see a firework show light up the sky.
3. Front Royal
All roads lead to Front Royal—literally. This dreamy small town is located in the heart of the Shenandoah Valley and is an entry point to Skyline Drive, which provides exceptional views of the Blue Ridge Mountains. While you’re there, check out the town’s enchanting Main Street to admire local art, learn more about Virginia’s love of beer at The Virginia Beer Museum, and participate in some nostalgic entertainment options. Of course, a trip to Front Royal isn’t complete without heading outdoors and strapping up your hiking boots to explore the Appalachian Trail, practicing your swing at a nearby golf course, or hopping on horseback to go on a scenic ride through one of Shenandoah National Park’s 180 miles of trails open to horse use.
4. South Hill
South Hill is a vibrant small town that possesses a rich history. Dig into the town’s unassuming corners to transport yourself back in time, which will make you feel like you’re starring in a historical drama. Venture to the Model Railroad Museum to admire model trains surrounded by scenery that captures the farmlands and features of Southern Virginia from the past. Additionally, be sure to visit Whittle’s Mill Dam, an old mill site which was constructed around 1756 on the banks of the Meherrin River. As the cherry on top to visiting South Hill’s historic sites, stop by The Colonial Center for Performing Arts to catch a show at one of Virginia’s last remaining vaudeville theatres. Fuel up at 313 Franklin Cocktails & Kitchen, located in a remodeled school building, before heading back out onto I-85 to continue your journey in Virginia.
