5 Easy Day Trips You Can Take From Richmond, My Favorite Included
Whether you're craving time on the water or an epic mountain vista, these easy day trips from Richmond promise to shake up your ordinary routine.
Living in Richmond has many perks, perhaps the most obvious of which is its central location. Two hours in any direction will take you somewhere new—the beach, the mountains, a lake, or even Washington, D.C. If you're looking to shake things up and enjoy a quick day trip, I've outlined some exciting options below, including one of my all-time favorite day trip destinations.
1. Alexandria, Virginia

One of Virginia's most walkable towns, Old Town Alexandria has so much to uncover in the way of restaurants, quirky historic sites, and lovely architecture. Grab a coffee from Misha's and then stroll the waterfront, marveling at all the activity on the Potomac. Enjoy a seated lunch at Gadsby's Tavern, where George Washington himself once dined (and keep your eyes out for ghosts!) If you've got some time in the afternoon, take a water taxi across the Potomac to Georgetown or the National Harbor. Alexandria is two hours from Richmond, depending on traffic.
2. Virginia Beach, Virginia
It's easy to forget that the beach is less than two hours from Richmond. I'm pleasantly surprised every time I make the trip to Virginia Beach, charmed by its family-friendly boardwalk and the amazing First Landing State Park. Few people realize that a trip to Virginia Beach can also be wonderfully affordable, making it the perfect summer escape.
3. Farmville, Virginia
Farmville is quickly becoming one of my favorite Virginia day trip destinations. It's supremely underrated and offers endless adventure, ranging from Greenfront Furniture Store, a one-million-square-foot furniture outlet, to High Bridge Trail State Park and some charming local cafes when you need a quick pick-me-up. High Bridge Trail is especially impressive, and if you've never been, it's a must! The bridge is 2,400 feet across and towers 125 feet above the river, offering a sweeping view of the surroundings. And all of this is just 75 minutes from Richmond.
4. Scottsville, Virginia
A small town south of Charlottesville, Scottsville is also a great day trip destination from Richmond, about 1.5 hours away. It's built along the James River and is steeped in river heritage. I recently took a guided batteau trip on the water, and it was one of the highlights of the year. I highly recommend a trip to Scottsville and a guided sunset tour from the James River Batteau Company.
5. Staunton, Virginia
Staunton is home to a nationally recognized historic downtown that is tailor-made for strolling, shopping, and dining. For its size, Staunton has an impressive number of must-try restaurants, wineries, and breweries, not to mention the American Shakespeare Center. It's hard to imagine a better pairing than dinner and a play and, if you arrive early enough, some time in the nearby Shenandoah National Park. Staunton is about 1 hour and 40 minutes from Richmond.
