Outdoor adventures in Virginia are never far away. Nearly every region of our state boasts some seriously incredible wonders, and today's feature spot is no exception. High Bridge Trail State Park lives up to its name in every way. At the center of the park is a towering bridge that you can hike across, and with the commanding views of the river and surrounding farmlands, you'll feel as though you've discovered your own slice of paradise. Here's more on the incredible bridge in Virginia worthy of a day trip:
Welcome to High Bridge Trail State Park!
Located in Southside Virginia, this breathtaking state park has one unmissable feature: a towering bridge that you can hike or bike across.
The entire trail is 31 miles long, and the bridge accounts for approximately 2,400 feet.
Perhaps more impressive is the fact that it's 125 feet tall! That's pretty tall as beautiful bridges go!
It is also the longest recreational bridge in Virginia...
...and among the longest bridges of its kind in the United States.
As you walk across the bridge, be sure to take in the surrounding views.
The bridge crosses the Appomattox River (one of the most beautiful rivers in Virginia), and as you probably guessed, it was once a former railroad route. We love taking our time crossing this bridge and admiring the view.
The bridge was originally constructed in 1854 to connect Petersburg and Lynchburg.
In fact, the bridge was even significant during the Civil War, and part of it was burned to prevent Union soldier advancement.
Fortunately, however, the bridge was rebuilt and reinforced after having been damaged.
The final trail crossed High Bridge on October 26, 2004, before it was closed permanently and then re-opened for recreational purposes only.
