I-81 Practically Runs Through All Of Virginia And It’s A Beautiful Drive

Interstate 81 in Virginia offers a scenic drive with beautiful views and unique towns along the way.

Is there anything better than a scenic drive in Virginia? We think not! There are countless back roads and winding trails that will showcase all the beauty the Old Dominion has to offer. Even our interstates have some beautiful views. One of those routes travels north and south - practically all the way through the state! Like any route, Interstate 81 does have its share of traffic. However, the surrounding scenery really is beautiful. Take a look at the photos below to catch a glimpse of the gorgeous Route 81 in Virginia.

Interstate 81 isn't unique to Virginia. In fact, it runs for 855.02 miles from Tennessee to West Virginia. However, the Virginia stretch is the longest of any, spanning 324.92 miles.

And, in our opinion, the Virginia stretch is also the most beautiful!

Sure, I-81 may be notorious for bouts of traffic and lots of trucks, but the scenery you'll enjoy along the way is spectacular.

Some beautiful towns you'll pass along the way include Bristol, Wytheville, Roanoke, Lexington, Luray, Front Royal, and Winchester.

Be sure to keep an eye out for a particularly stunning I-81 scenic overlook.

On a clear day, drivers will enjoy mountain scenery, as the road more or less traces the length of the Appalachian Mountains.

In spring and summer, keep your eyes peeled for bursts of color from blooming wildflowers and trees.

And most importantly of all, be sure to drive safely and take time to stop in the unique Virginia towns you'll travel through.

One of our favorite attractions along I-81 in Virginia is the beautiful Shenandoah National Park:
