Escape to These Charming Mountain Towns in Utah Before Fall Ends

Fall is upon us, and what better way to celebrate this glorious season than a quick getaway to one of Utah's most charming mountain towns?

Fall is upon us, and what better way to celebrate this glorious season than a quick getaway to one of Utah's most charming mountain towns? While the state's mountains are best known for their epic skiing terrain, many small towns are tucked away at higher elevations, providing ideal base camps for outdoor recreation and scenic views no matter the time of year. And imagine spending time in one of these charming communities where you're close to hiking trails and can bask in the colorful show the trees put on during the fall? Here are three such mountain towns where you can make a fall escape:

1. Park City

Groves of golden aspens surround the town of Park City, but leaf peeping isn't the only way to enjoy your fall escape here. With cool, crisp mountain air, it's perhaps the most enjoyable time of the year for mountain biking or hiking along one of the many trails in and around town. One such trail is the 3.6-mile Dawn's Trail, one of Park City's best trails to immerse yourself in autumn colors. If you prefer a more relaxed approach to viewing the fall colors, take a scenic chairlift ride up the mountain through Park City Mountain Resort. Of course, taking a scenic drive is always an option, and the Guardsman Pass Scenic Byway from Park City is one of the most stunning byways in the state. The road, which has both paved and gravel sections, winds its way through the mountains with panoramic views of the fall colors. It's also a fantastic route to get to the next mountain town we are about to discover: Midway.

2. Midway

Located in Heber Valley at the foot of the Wasatch Mountains, the town of Midway is best known for its Swiss influence—after all, it was settled by Swiss pioneers in the 1860s. In addition to its European-style architecture, the mountains and lush valleys of the area certainly make it feel like Switzerland, and these are reasons why Midway's nickname is "Little Switzerland."

Visit Midway during autumn, and you're in for a colorful feast for the eyes as aspens and maple leaves turn gold and crimson. To get the most out of your fall foliage adventure in this Utah mountain town, hiking is an obvious choice, but you may also want to consider a horseback ride through Wasatch Mountain State Park, which is known for its beguiling autumnal colors.

3. Logan

Home to Utah State University, Logan may be a bustling college town once students return to campus, but it's also a fantastic fall getaway destination. This northern Utah town boasts beautiful scenery, a vibrant downtown scene, and unforgettable fall foliage. If you visit for the fall colors, make sure to set aside time for a drive along the 41-mile Logan Canyon National Scenic Byway (U.S. Route 89) through the canyon as it twists and turns through the forests and rugged landscape for some of the state's best scenery. If you visit the Logan area the second weekend of October, make sure to attend the Fall Harvest Festival in the nearby town of Wellsville. This event features a corn maze, hay and pony rides, and activities the whole family can enjoy.

Fall is an ideal time to explore the great outdoors, go leaf peeping, take a scenic drive, attend a festival, and enjoy the cooler mountain air. It's no wonder that this season is a favorite for so many. And exploring one of Utah's charming mountain towns is the perfect way to experience it all.
