11 Cozy Cities in the U.S. That Are Peak Hygge Vibes

These 11 U.S. cities are where you'll find charming streets, cozy cafés, and simple comforts that make your visit truly unforgettable.

I love the Danish word hygge (pronounced hoo-gah). This single word describes the feeling of contentment, overall well-being, and pure coziness. It’s about enjoying the simple things in life, building relationships, and being present in the moment. It’s the feeling you get when cuddled up next to a warm fire in a cabin tucked away in the mountains or wandering around a bookstore with your favorite warm beverage in hand. Throughout the U.S., you’ll find destinations that seem to evoke these hygge vibes. They are places where you’ll find cozy weather, unique culture, exceptional activities, and businesses and restaurants with just the right amount of character. The following are just 11 cities in the U.S. where you'll find that extra dose of comfy.

1. Seattle, Washington

alt

When I think of hygge cities, Seattle is always at the top of the list. The frequent rain and fog set a mood where you want to bundle up in your favorite sweater and boots before venturing outdoors. Here, you can’t go wrong with the exceptional coffeehouses, bookstores, and mom-and-pop shops that line the streets just waiting to welcome you inside. Additionally, the walkable neighborhoods and numerous city parks make it easy to spend time outdoors (Discovery Park is worth a spot on your bucket list!), and can quickly boost your mood and help you connect to the community.

2. Portland, Oregon

alt

Similar to Seattle, Portland is a city where a cozy life is easy to find due to the rainy, gloomy weather. It’s a destination featuring coffee shops and cafes everywhere you turn—places where you can sit with a warm beverage and stay for a while. Portland is also home to Powell’s Books, one of the largest independent bookstores in the world. You can spend all day in the warmth of this single store, getting lost in countless stories. And, even better, Powell’s is just one of dozens of independent bookstores in the city. You just need a cozy chair next to a fireplace, and you’ve got all the makings of the perfect moment.

3. San Francisco, California

alt

The cool weather, postcard-perfect environment, and unique culture are just a few of the reasons San Francisco is known as one of the coziest cities in the U.S. The City by the Bay is known for its cool, damp, and foggy weather, making you want to stay indoors, snuggled with those you love. The city's location, with its numerous hills, stunning coastal views, and famous bridges, invites you to slow down and appreciate the beauty around you. Of course, the incredible art community, thriving music scene, extraordinary cuisine, and very distinct neighborhoods and architecture also contribute to a destination full of complete joy.

4. Salt Lake City, Utah

alt

Having grown up in Utah, I’m very familiar with the overall vibe of SLC. It’s a place that often surprises people due to its incredibly diverse arts community, evolving food scene, and unique history. While it may be the largest city in Utah, it still retains a small-town vibe, especially when compared to other cities on our list. However, one of the reasons I believe SLC is peak hygge vibes is because there are nearly a dozen ski resorts all within a short drive of the city, along with countless outdoor activities, resort towns, and national parks to explore and enjoy. This is a place that overflows with character.

5. Anchorage, Alaska

alt

Anchorage may be one of the larger cities in Alaska, but it certainly has a more laid-back, relaxed atmosphere. The scenery alone will make you want to stop and give thanks for the world around you, and the countless outdoor activities, no matter the time of year, help you experience pure bliss. And, even better, Anchorage is home to many vacation rentals with hygge vibes like this chalet with large windows, a massive fireplace, a sauna, plush bedding, and plenty of blankets for snuggling.

6. Minneapolis, Minnesota

alt

When you live in a place as cold as Minneapolis, a cozy atmosphere is a necessity to help you get through the year. Comfy boots, large scarves, and chunky sweaters are almost a requirement for those cold days when you have to leave the warmth of your home. I particularly love the coffee shops and bakeries scattered throughout the neighborhoods, which make it easy to add a touch of sweetness to your day. And the many breweries and restaurants give off cozy vibes later in the evening with heated patios. Of course, if your happy place is outdoors, Elm Creek Park Reserve, just a short drive from downtown Minneapolis, is a fabulous place to lift your spirits and improve your mood with cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, fat biking, and tubing in the winter months, and hiking, fishing, and archery in the summer.

7. Milwaukee, Wisconsin

alt

If you are like me, the cold, snowy weather of Milwaukee will make you want to stay indoors, but this Wisconsin city provides plenty to do, no matter your interests. For example, it’s easy to take up a hygge hobby like baking or knitting, with dozens of classes taught by experts and local shops to buy supplies, like Cream City Yarn. You can visit independent, locally-owned bookstores to find fictional worlds to dive into, or even visit a pottery shop and learn to make your own creation. For me, when I want a hygge vibe, I love to light candles throughout my home, and Milwaukee is home to some of the best local candle shops, such as Milwaukee Candle Co.

8. Eureka Springs, Arkansas

alt

There are several reasons why people travel from all over to visit Eureka Springs, Arkansas. For one, this town is nestled in the Ozark Mountains, features winding streets lined with Victorian homes and gorgeous trees, and has a downtown area home to crave-worthy coffee shops, historic bed and breakfasts, art galleries, and boutique shops. Many people also visit Eureka Springs for the relaxation, healing, and comfort found in the area's dozens of natural springs. Many of these springs are easily accessible in the city's parks; others require a short walk before you can enjoy the water.

9. Portland, Maine

alt

Yes, Portland, Oregon, may already be on this list, but you can’t forget about Portland, Maine. This town is a coastal getaway with eye-catching architecture, darling shops, and restaurants with menu items you’ll be craving for weeks to come. Portland, Maine, is well known for its cobblestone streets and Victorian homes and businesses that can make you feel like you’ve stepped back in time—back to a place where life was simpler and slower paced. During a visit here, you can visit one of the well-known coffee shops or bakeries (I recommend Holy Donut), visit Sherman’s Maine Coast Book Shop, and spend time enjoying unforgettable ocean views at the nearby Portland Head Light … and that’s just the beginning.

10. Washington, Connecticut

alt

Washington, Connecticut, is one of the smaller cities on our list, but I couldn’t leave it off. This unique destination of approximately 4,000 residents inspired the location of one of the most hygge television shows—"Gilmore Girls." This town inspires with its gorgeous rolling hills that are breathtaking in the autumn when covered in fall foliage and in the winter, after a heavy snowfall. The streets are typically quiet and lined with historic homes, shops, and restaurants. The Colonial architecture is sure to impress, and you’ll find restaurants and coffee shops where the staff will quickly know you by name.

11. Brevard, North Carolina

alt

Brevard is home to approximately 7,600 residents, offering a little bit of everything for everyone—no matter your mood or passion. Here, you’ll find an incredible arts and music scene, as well as excellent breweries and eclectic boutiques and shops. However, this area is best known for its waterfalls. This North Carolina town is known as the Land of Waterfalls, and you can explore more than 250 waterfalls in the area. Hygge vibes are all about slowing down and being present in the moment, and when you are surrounded by natural beauty like Brevard's, it’s easy to experience this warmth and happiness.

Honestly, hygge isn't a physical place—it's a feeling. It’s a sense of warmth, comfort, and calm. It’s a mood, an atmosphere, and a vibe. What other cities in the U.S. do you believe boast peak hygge vibes? Let me know by filling out this nomination form. I'd love to hear your ideas.
