These Are the Most Underrated Tourist Spots in Washington, According To Local Redditors
Redditors are making their voices heard! These nine destinations all deserve a spot on your bucket list.
I’m not a huge social media fan. I don’t use Instagram. I rarely access X. I’ve never spent hours scrolling through TikTok. I typically only use Facebook for work. But I do love Reddit. This platform is where you can often find me online and it’s actually come in handy, especially during my travels. In fact, after spending some time on this online platform, I discovered what many Redditors believe are the most underrated tourist spots in Washington ... and some answers surprised me. Here’s what local Redditors believe are some of the most underrated spots in the Evergreen State. Do you agree?
1. Billy Frank Jr. Nisqually National Wildlife Refuge, Olympia
For the perfect day outdoors, you cannot go wrong with a visit to the Billy Frank Jr. Nisqually National Wildlife Refuge in Olympia. This unique destination is home to more than 275 species of birds and other animals, and features year-round trails where you can wander through habitats and view wildlife of all sizes. During your visit, I recommend you add a hike along the Nisqually Estuary Boardwalk to your bucket list. It’s an incredible journey above the water.
2. Point Defiance Park, Tacoma
Point Defiance Park is a 760-acre park next to Puget Sound in Tacoma. This large urban park is unique as it’s built within an old-growth forest, creating the perfect place to escape the hustle of the city. You’ll find hiking trails, gardens, beaches, and even historic buildings throughout this breathtaking destination.
3. Lakewold Gardens, Lakewood
I have never visited Lakewold Gardens but after learning more about this underrated destination, it’s moving to the top of my bucket list. This is a 10-acre garden that’s not only full of beautiful landscapes but also a lot of history. The garden dates back to 1908, and today, is a place where you can disconnect and escape the stresses of the world. Spend a morning exploring the garden's many paths and bring along lunch for a picnic outdoors. Lakewold Gardens also hosts several events throughout the year that you won't want to miss.
4. Yakima Canyon
There are dozens of scenic drives in Washington to choose from — many are perfect for tourists and locals alike. However, one that doesn’t get the attention it deserves is the Yakima River Canyon Scenic Byway. This drive is only 27 miles and follows the beautiful Yakima River through some of the most remarkable scenery including basalt cliffs that stand more than 2,000 feet tall. This drives takes you between the towns of Ellensburg and Yakima and features many day trip destinations such as Umtanum Creek Recreation Area and the Selah Cliffs Natural Area Preserve.
5. Steptoe Butte State Park, Colfax
I agree with one Redditor who named Steptoe Butte State Park a hidden gem in Eastern Washington and a destination that deserves a spot on every bucket list. This state park is located in the heart of the Palouse Region and is home to Steptoe Butte, a 3,612-foot-tall quartzite butte. Hike to the top of the butte and enjoy Palouse views, and on clear days, you can look into both Oregon and Idaho.
6. Dry Falls
I was not surprised when I saw many Redditors name Dry Falls as an underrated tourist spot in Washington. This incredible natural feature was once a massive waterfall that was created during the Ice Age Floods more than 13,000 years ago. Today, it is an impressive 400-foot-tall, 3.5-mile-wide cliff with beautiful bodies of water along the base. Plan a visit to the Dry Falls Visitor Center to learn more about this incredible natural feature and it’s history. You won't regret it.
7. Goldendale Observatory State Park, Goldendale
Goldendale Observatory State Park Heritage Site is another destination in the Evergreen State I have never visited but now can't wait to explore. Located in Goldendale, and on a 2,100-foot hill, this is a prime stargazing destination. Here you will find one of the largest public telescopes in the country and a variety of programs to teach you more about the remarkable creations high above us. You’ll want to visit the Goldendale Observatory website for operating hours, program schedules, admission, and more information.
8. Steamboat Rock State Park
With more than 140 state parks in Washington, it is easy for several to fly under the radar. That’s the case with Steamboat Rock State Park. This is a 5,043-acre park that sits at the northern end of Banks Lake. It’s the ultimate outdoor lover’s playground with up to 50,000 feet of shore, year-round campgrounds, hiking trails, and more. I also recommend you plan a trip to Grand Coulee Dam. It’s quite an impressive sight.
9. Discovery Park, Seattle
While Discovery Park is one of Seattle’s largest city parks, it’s not as popular as spots like Pike Place Market and the Space Needle in the Emerald City. However, it is a destination that several Redditors recommend visiting. This park is an impressive 534 acres and offers some stunning views of Puget Sound and the Cascade and Olympic Mountains. This natural area is home to nearly 12 miles of hiking trails and the West Point Lighthouse, one of the few active lighthouses in Washington State. This is one tourist attraction in Seattle where you’ll want your hiking boots, water, and a sense of adventure.
