This Day Trip Will Take You To The Best Wine And Waterfalls In South Dakota
Discover a curated day trip in South Dakota featuring picturesque waterfalls and charming wineries.
When it comes to the weekend, there is nothing quite like gassing up the car and hitting the road! If you are looking for waterfalls near me in South Dakota, we have curated a trip containing only the essentials: wineries and waterfalls. If you are ready to get your w's (meaning wine and waterfalls, of course!) on, buckle up and take this unforgettable South Dakota day trip (link to the interactive map can be found here):
1. Calamity Jane Winery & Mercantile
Editor's Note: As of April 2022, Calamity Jane is now a coffee shop and grill. We will no longer be updating this establishment to reflect its wine offerings. Let's get the trip going with some coffee and beautiful wines, shall we? Calamity Jane has all of the above, plus a delicious assortment of breakfast favorites and pastries. If you do not have a designated driver for the trip, plan to just get a bottle to take it home for later. If you do have one, however, Calamity Jane's offers generous wine samples and tastings. You can learn much more about Calamity Jane and its incredible wines by visiting its website.
2. Bridal Veil Falls
Now that we have had an adequate amount of breakfast food, coffee, and/or wine, let's get to the co-star of this trip: the waterfalls. Located within Spearfish Canyon, Bridal Veil Falls is one of the best waterfalls in South Dakota. Its popularity is thanks to not only its picturesque cascade but easy access, as you can enjoy it while on foot or even while driving by in your car.
3. Roughlock Falls
As if you really needed another reason to love the Mount Rushmore State, several of our waterfalls are close together and easy to find, like the jaw-dropping Roughlock Waterfall in South Dakota. Did you know that these falls are some of the most photographed in the state?
4. Spearfish Falls
They say that good things come in threes, which is obviously the case with these waterfalls, as they are all within 12 minutes of each other. While Roughlock and Bridal Veil are stunning, you really cannot miss the easy hiking trail to Spearfish Falls, as its sights, sounds, and smells will transport you to a totally different world. Slightly off the beaten path, Spearfish Falls is well worth the walk.
5. Grapes and Grinds
Now that we have hit all of the falls in one fell swoop, let's go relax and unwind with a glass of one of South Dakota's finest wines. Located in Keystone, Grapes and Grinds is, like Calamity Jane, a winery and coffee shop that also offers a huge assortment of different gifts and treasures. We will drink (and shop) to that! Want to learn even more about G&G? Visit their website!
6. Prairie Berry Winery
Arguably the most famous of South Dakota wineries is Prairie Berry, so what better place to make a final stop? From their iconic Red Ass Rhubarb to Apricot and Strawberry Fusion, you are sure to find a wine (or five) to love at Prairie Berry. For a full list of Prairie Berry wines, please visit their website.
