The Small Town in South Dakota That Feels Like Taylor Sheridan’s 1883
Ready to experience shootouts and 1880s trains? Relive the era of outlaws and cowboys in Hill City, South Dakota.
I’ve been making the trek to Hill City, South Dakota, for as long as I can remember. Not much has changed in this little town, which feels straight out of an episode of Taylor Sheridan’s 1883. With a rich history of cowboys, gold mining, and saloons, it’s like stepping back in time at this small Black Hills town.
Everywhere you look in Hill City, you'll find reminders of the Old West. This feeling is particularly prominent when you catch a ride on the historic 1880 Train. Next to the train depot, you’ll also find the South Dakota State Railroad Museum. This steam train takes passengers on a scenic ride between Hill City and Keystone, South Dakota. The sound of the whistle, the chugging of the engine, and the vintage train cars evoke the era of western expansion. After your ride, be sure to go inside the museum and explore the different exhibits that bring the American railroad system to life.
Additionally, Hill City frequently hosts re-enactments of “shootouts” between outlaws in the middle of Main Street. The town is littered with old-timey shops and saloons. You can even dress up in 1880s costumes and have your photo taken like you’re an outlaw yourself. I also love to get lost exploring the wood creations at Dahl's Chainsaw Art.
For food, my favorite restaurant has long been the Alpine Inn. Be sure to arrive early, as this hot spot is always crowded, doesn’t take reservations, and only accepts cash. The main course menu is small, with the entree options ranging between a large steak and a small steak. However, vegetarian options have been added in recent years. The highlight to me has always been the extensive dessert menu. Having worked just down the street from the Alpine Inn, I quickly learned that this German-inspired restaurant was a local favorite. Furthermore, as the name suggests, the Alpine Inn does offer accommodations.
Back when I worked at Mount Rushmore KOA Resort at Palmer Gulch Resort, taking a horseback ride with The Stables at Palmer Gulch was one of my favorite ways to experience the Black Hills. The Stables offers a variety of ride types, including a chuck wagon dinner ride that lets riders taste exactly what it was like to enjoy their meal under the stars, surrounded by cowboys. Breakfast chuckwagon shows and standard trail rides are also available.
Of course, if you're visiting Hill City, you'll need to make the quick 20-minute drive to Mount Rushmore National Memorial. Additionally, several hiking trails and scenic viewpoints surround the area.
In the 30 years I’ve been visiting Hill City, hardly anything has changed. I don’t expect much to change in the next 30 years. The town still holds tight to its Gold Rush-era history, and no one bats an eye at a cowboy riding his horse down the street. If you’re a lover of all things 1883, 1923, or Yellowstone, you’ll feel right at home in this truly old-school community.
