It's here, nestled near the border of North Carolina, that you'll find one of the state's most beautiful natural wonders: Lower Whitewater Falls. Not far from Salem, South Carolina awaits one of the most picturesque waterfalls on the East Coast. Whitewater Falls is the highest waterfall east of the Rocky Mountains, and it's shared between South Carolina and North Carolina.
The waterfall is made up of six different sections, and the beautiful Lower Falls can be accessed via a 2-mile trail. (4 miles roundtrip).
Hikers should plan between 45 minutes and 1 hour to get to the waterfall.
Following the trail, you'll meander through beautiful hardwood forests and along streams and rivers.
The trail is well-marked, although you should wear appropriate hiking shoes and gear to be sure your experience is as enjoyable as possible.
The platform will offer hikers breathtaking views of Lower Whitewater Falls, a 200-foot drop that some argue is the most impressive section of the entire waterfall series.
The waterfall is especially dramatic after heavy rainfall when the sound of the gorge is positively mesmerizing.
