Prudence Island In Rhode Island Was Named One Of The Most Stunning Lesser-Known Places In The U.S.

Rhode Island may be a small state, but those who call it home know it's still full of hidden gems. And when people come from out of state, they tend to flock to our more well-known attractions. But even some Rhode Islanders haven't seen firsthand how beautiful and peaceful Prudence Island is. In fact, it's one of the most perfect off-the-beaten-path spots in America.

Prudence Island is located in Narragansett Bay (and is the third largest island in the bay).

Technically, it's part of the town of Portsmouth. But you'll feel like you're in your own world when you're here.

The island is easily reached by ferry from Bristol.

The ferry has limited seating (and a limited schedule), so you'll definitely want to plan your trip in advance.

There aren't many amenities on Prudence Island, but there are a couple of iconic landmarks, like the Prudence Island Lighthouse.

This is the oldest lighthouse tower in the state that is still standing -- it dates back to 1823.

Prudence Island is home to Rhode Island's last remaining one-room schoolhouse, which was still in use until 2019.

It was then turned over to the Audubon Society of Rhode Island.

Also worth noting: During World War II, the island was used by the US Navy as an ammunition depot.

And although those days are long gone, a few military structures remain.

This is the most remote part of Rhode Island, so take a day trip when you really need to get away from it all.

Between the stunning nature trails, breathtaking beaches and ocean views, and historic lighthouse, it's easy to see why Prudence Island is such a beloved hidden gem.
