Take A Day Trip To Laurel Caverns, The Deepest Cave In Pennsylvania

Laurel Caverns, the deepest cave in Pennsylvania, offers guided tours, cave rappelling, and scenic views, making it a must-visit attraction.

Bucket list time! Pennsylvania boasts so many natural and man-made attractions - from Pine Creek Gorge to Falls Trail in Ricketts Glen State Park - that it would probably take a lifetime to see them all. That's why we have to prioritize, right? If you don't have the deepest cave in Pennsylvania on your bucket list yet, you'll definitely want to consider including it.

Tucked just eight miles from the Western Pennsylvania town of Hopwood, Laurel Caverns, at 464 feet deep, holds the distinction of being the deepest cave in PA.

Explore 3,000 feet of Laurel Caverns on the Traditional Guided Tour that will give you an up-close look at the calcareous sandstone cave.

Wear sturdy, comfortable shoes and a jacket - the cave maintains a year-round temperature of 52 degrees Fahrenheit - and be prepared to walk up and down stairs and sloped areas.

You'll follow your guide to 150 feet below ground on the one-hour tour. However, you can also embark on the 30-minute modified traditional tour, ideal for those who don't or can't climb stairs.

Up for adventure underground? Go cave rappelling (designed for beginners) during a class that will allow you to rappel from a 40-foot cliff.

If you already have rappelling experience, sign up for spelunking in the lower or in the upper cave.

Just outside of Laurel Caverns, which closes each fall and winter to protect bats during their hibernation, lie sweeping views of the landscape.

Admire the views and join in some of the other on-site fun, such as playing a round or two of mini-golf or go panning for gemstones.

Explore the deepest cave in Pennsylvania, open daily from April through October; check Laurel Caverns' website for exact dates.
