We can all probably agree that Pennsylvania lays claim to some of the most charming small towns – from Lititz to New Hope – anywhere. Set against the backdrop of the Pocono Mountains, Jim Thorpe easily ranks as one of the prettiest small towns in the state, drawing visitors all year around for its many outdoor activities, quaint shops, darling restaurants, and relaxed way of life. It’s also a picture-perfect destination during the autumn.
Jim Thorpe oozes charm and small town friendliness, just two reasons it is affectionately known as The Switzerland of the United States.
With a population of under 5,000, the quaint eastern Pennsylvania town looks as though it’s stepped right off of an old-fashioned postcard.
Every autumn, the small town hosts its annual Fall Foliage Festival in October. The popular festival draws visitors from all over with its full menu of fun – ghost tours, activities for the kiddos, and scenic train rides.
One of the best ways to admire the fall foliage, in fact, is to climb aboard a train with the Lehigh Gorge Scenic Railway. Rides last 70 minutes and offer sensational views of the landscape as it’s painted in brilliant shades of gold, red, and orange.
A trip to Jim Thorpe would probably be incomplete, especially during the fall, without a little bit of ghost hunting. Join a tour with GhostWalks, which offers a one-mile, one-hour walk that’s filled with tales of the paranormal.
If you really want to increase your odds of experiencing the paranormal, check into the Inn at Jim Thorpe. The enchanting inn is said to be haunted by the spirit of a nurse and weird occurrences – like waking up to chairs turned upside down – are shared by countless guests.
Don’t forget to carve out time for a stroll through downtown, where you can go shopping and indulge in a delicious meal at one of the small town’s numerous quaint restaurants.
Plan your visit on the official website of Jim Thorpe. Or, go here for Facebook.
