This Epic Portland Tour Takes You On A Trolley, Train, And Tram All In One Day
See Portland in a whole new light with this fun excursion right in the heart of the city. Called the 4T trail, for its inclusion of train, trail, tram and trolley, this adventure-packed trip is great for both visitors and long-time residents. For just $5 and an afternoon of your time, you can have this epic journey through some of the most scenic spots that Portland has to offer.
Start the day downtown and locate your closest MAX station for the first leg of the journey on train.
Purchase a $5 all day pass, and head to the Oregon Zoo on the Red or Blue line.
Once you reach the zoo, you are going to follow the signage across the Highway 26 overpass and into the woods.
You will quickly join with the Marquam Trail and escape from the freeway area into the forest within minutes.
The 1.3 mile hike to Council Crest is uphill, but your legs will thank you later.
This busy stretch of trail is worth it for some of the best views in the city.
Arrive at Council Crest and take in the amazing vantage point of the highest point in Portland.
At 1,073 feet, this spot is great for a picnic or at least a quick rest before continuing on your journey.
Head down from Council Crest and you have two options.
One will take you on a 2.2-mile hike through Marquam Nature Park while the other will take you on a a 1.6-mile walk downhill on city streets.
Whichever route you choose, continue following the 4T signs until you reach OHSU.
Once you arrive at the hospital, this is a great time to stop at the public restroom or grab a cup of coffee if needed.
Locate the Portland Aerial Tram and wait in line to board the shiny pod-like cars.
The tram is free downhill, so no need to purchase a ticket. Tram cars depart every 6 minutes, so the wait will be quick.
This epic ride offers some of the best views of the city, Cascade Mountains, and the Willamette River.
The tram runs Monday through Saturday. Weekday hours are 5:30am to 9:30pm, while Saturday hours are 9 am to 5 pm, so be sure to plan your trip accordingly.
Locate the trolley stop across the street from the tram's drop off point.
Head into downtown on the trolley to complete your loop and end up at your starting point.
This fun trip is a great way to see Portland in a different way.
It is moderately strenuous because of the climb to and from Council Crest, but overall, this is a wonderful hike and trip because of the immense change of scenery throughout.
