Escape to This Charming Mountain Town in North Carolina Before Fall Ends

Banner Elk is a charming mountain town in North Carolina that truly explodes with color in the fall.

Few states can compare to North Carolina in the fall. Seeing those beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains decked out in fall colors is one of those bucket list moments you never forget. There are plenty of charming mountain towns in western North Carolina that are perfect for a fall getaway. One of my favorites is Banner Elk, and this mountain town is just the ticket to a relaxing weekend of leaf peeping. Let’s check it out:

Sitting pretty in North Carolina’s Blue Ridge Mountains, Banner Elk is one of my favorite towns in North Carolina. Its proximity to two popular ski resorts (Sugar Mountain and Beech Mountain Resort) makes it a favorite destination for winter, but this charming mountain town is perfect in the fall.

Things to do in Banner Elk

Banner Elk has a population of about 1,000 residents, but it feels much larger. Despite its small-town charm, you’ll find plenty of things to do in and around Banner Elk

Blue Ridge Parkway

The Blue Ridge Parkway is a beautiful drive year-round, but I promise you, it really shines in the fall. Driving the Blue Ridge Parkway in the fall is one of the most scenic drives in the country, and there’s a new view around every corner.

There are several hiking trails and places to pull over to take in the views. Don’t set a schedule and just drive, deciding to pull over whenever a side quest strikes your fancy. Leaf peeping cannot be rushed!

Grandfather Mountain

Grandfather Mountain is one of North Carolina’s most popular attractions, and it’s just a 20-minute drive from Banner Elk. You could spend an entire day exploring Grandfather Mountain State Park, but if you just have a few hours, I’d pick the Mile High Swinging Bridge. On a clear day, you can see Sugar Mountain, Grandmother Mountain, Table Rock, and even Mount Mitchell. If the skies are super clear, you might even be able to see the Charlotte skyline (90 miles south!). As its name suggests, the bridge is in fact 5,280 feet above sea level—hope you’re not afraid of heights!

Woolly Worm Festival

Banner Elk often hosts seasonal festivals, but nothing compares to the iconic Woolly Worm Festival. This quirky fall festival has been a fan favorite since 1978, and it’s one of the best festivals in North Carolina. It’s always the third weekend in October, so mark your calendars for October 18-19, 2025.

Where to stay in Banner Elk

I think a cozy cabin with a view is the best way to soak in those fall colors. This treehouse in Banner Elk is perfectly situated to allow you to immerse yourself in nature. The owners have done a remarkable job decorating it, and there are plenty of large windows to admire the view. There’s also a fire pit and a hot tub!
