The Remote Small Town in North Carolina Locals Don’t Want You To Find

Tucked where the Hiwassee and Valley Rivers meet, Murphy is a misty mountain hideaway with scenic river trails, local brews, and world-class views.

When I first started traveling as an adult (yikes, that was a long time ago!), I wanted to see all the big-name U.S. cities, the ones you don't have to name a state for, like San Francisco, Denver, New York, and Boston. And while I'm proud to say I've stood at the Golden Gate Bridge and the Statue of Liberty, something shifted along the way. I started chasing the places that don't make the highlight reels: the remote towns, the hidden gems, the ones locals quietly keep to themselves.

What I feared would be boring turned out to be anything but. I've tackled incredible hikes, stumbled into hole-in-the-wall restaurants with food that rivaled any big city, and met some of the warmest people I've ever encountered. And tucked into the far western corner of North Carolina, Murphy is exactly the kind of place I'm talking about.

If you're looking for hidden gems in North Carolina, Murphy is the perfect place to start, and once you find it, you'll understand why those in the know keep coming back.

Tucked Away in the Blue Ridge Mountains, Murphy Feels Like a Secret

Sitting at an elevation of about 1,539 to 1,604 feet, this quiet, misty gateway to the Smokies is home to about 1,600 residents and sits right where the Valley and Hiwassee rivers meet. Whether you're traveling solo or bringing the whole family, the surrounding peaks are impossible to miss. It's easily one of the most underrated Blue Ridge Mountains destinations, with a level of seclusion that's getting harder to find these days.

Scenic Trails, Local History, and Outdoor Beauty

This charming mountain town has several notable attractions. The Murphy River Walk is a beautiful three-mile walk that follows the Valley and Hiwassee Rivers, as well as the historic downtown area. Families often head to this fully paved path for a fun ride on bikes or a scenic walk. The path has several entrances, including one at Konehete Veterans Park and another at the L&N Depot. Trailgoers can enjoy the rhythmic sound of the rushing water and spot wildlife like ducks and herons. The air here is noticeably crisper, especially during the spring when the mountain laurel begins to bloom.

While Murphy does appeal to nature lovers, it's also a town that history buffs will enjoy, too. The Cherokee Historical Museum, located in downtown Murphy, is home to over 2,000 Cherokee artifacts. At the museum, visitors can learn about the Native Americans who once inhabited the area and view their artwork. It is a vital stop to understand the deep cultural roots of this remote small town in North Carolina.

You should definitely make time for the Hiwassee Dam. At 307 feet tall, its massive concrete face is a sharp, industrial contrast to the soft green hills all around it. It’s a great place to spread out a picnic and look out over the water, especially during the autumn months when the reflection of the fall colors hits the lake.

Where To Eat, Drink, and Explore Nearby

I've covered outdoor adventures and historic treasures; now it's time to wine and dine. Murphy is also home to an incredible winery and brewery: Nottely River Valley Vineyards and Valley River Brewery. Visit the family-owned and operated vineyard's tasting room to enjoy their delicious wines with a view of the vines. Valley River Brewery serves craft beer brewed on-site, as well as wood-fired pizza—you’ll smell the smoky aroma of the oven the moment you walk through the door.

Speaking of detours, Fields of the Wood is about a half-hour drive outside of Murphy. This 200-acre Christian-themed park is home to the world's largest representation of the Ten Commandments. Additionally, Mercier Orchards, a fourth-generation family farm, is only a 40-minute drive from Murphy in Blue Ridge, Georgia. It’s worth the detour for their famous fried pies and hard apple cider.

After a day of exploring, head to Legends Steakhouse, a family-owned favorite in downtown Murphy. Casual yet classy, the menu runs from juicy steaks to chicken and waffles to hummingbird cake. There's no better way to end the day.

Why Murphy Is the Perfect Weekend Escape

Murphy is easily one of the best remote towns to explore for day trips or weekend getaways in North Carolina. But when is the best time to actually experience it, you ask? While the town is stunning year-round, the magic really peaks during the autumn leaf-peeping season and the vibrant blooms of spring. These world-class mountain views are exactly what set it apart from all the other charming small towns in North Carolina, making it a quiet, special corner of the state that feels like a genuine discovery every time you visit.
